If by SJ Muni you mean SJ International, they are not particularly
unfriendly, but not the best choice. They cater mostly to the 'heavy
iron'. Reid-Hillview would be the best; Hayward is tight under SFO's
airspace and you'd have to cross or go around the tip of the bay to
Fremont. RH is a pretty straight shot to Fremont and the traffic is not
so bad on the weekends.

friendly to us little guys? Last time I flew out of SJC was in 1969. I
know things have changed a lot. I have the option of filing IFR if
necessary. I'm planning on arriving next Saturday or Sunday.

From what I understand, very big 'Negative' on that.
LVK isn't much further. HWD is probably the closest to Fremont.
If you really must fly into the south bay, RHV is likely the place to go.
I haven't been able to afford to fly for the last couple years, but back when
I could, I was flying out of RHV. Nice airport, but busy on weekends. Abutts
SJC airspace.

Then fire up your air compressor (clean filtered dry air only need apply) set
at 10 psi or so and blow air into the hole in your filter (the rubber tipped
nozzles seal well). You will see a lot more oil that was trapped in the
system and filter get blown down into the sump to drain out. Do this a few
times while you clean and gap your plugs and when you finally unscrew the
filter, it will be 99.44% empty. Don't forget to cut it open to inspect for
metal.

Every year someone comes up with a let's get together so we can put a face
on some of the other listers we do not know other than by this list.
I am going to put a note in van's tent ( if they allow me :>)=A0 ) that says
let's meet here at noon each day. I will usually show up and we can go
somewhere to eat lunch together and get to chat eyeball to eyeball.
Let's plan on being there at noon and departing for lunch around 10 minutes
after that.

The President's Personal No-Fly Zone

no foreign force. It comes from the dangerous habit many of our leaders fell
into over several generations -- letting the power and the resources that
are the basis of freedom slip from grass-roots America into the hands of a
remote central authority."

In this age of terrorism, power and resources no longer slip into the hands
of central authorities, as President Reagan warned two decades ago -- they
are unabashedly snatched by leaders who claim to be promoting security.
Consider the Bush administration's ban on general aviation at Reagan
National Airport. Before Sept. 11, 2001, the airport handled about 175
general aviation (private planes seating fewer than 20 passengers) flights a
day. After the terrorist attacks, the administration closed the airport to
private planes, except for a handful authorized to carry government
officials. Signature Flight Support, the company that services general
aviation at National, has lost millions of dollars since then. Many of its
employees have lost their jobs, and citizens are denied access to a public
facility -- all because of edicts from the Bush administration, which has no
direct jurisdiction over the airport.
In 1986 Congress transferred control of National and Dulles airports to
Virginia and the District. The two jurisdictions then created the
Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority to operate the airports. The
executive branch always has had theoretical control of the airports through
the Federal Aviation Administration, but no other president has interfered
in their operations. After the Sept. 11 attacks, Bush went so far as to
voice publicly the possibility of permanently closing National.
After Virginia's congressional delegation went to the White House as
supplicants, Bush decided to allow commercial flights at National to resume
gradually. But general aviation within a 15-mile radius of the Washington
Monument is still prohibited. Has anyone pressed officials to make their
case that the risk justifies such a restriction?
General aviation is a hard sector for terrorists to infiltrate because it
consists of a small group of people who know one another. Airfield operators
know their pilots; pilots know their passengers. National drew a
particularly safe crowd because it was never popular with recreational
fliers. Its pre-Sept. 11 clientele were mostly business travelers -- CEOs
who schedule flights in advance and have professional pilots with security
clearances.
Yet federal officials seem oblivious to these facts, according to David
Wartofsky, owner of Potomac Airfield in Fort Washington. Potomac Airfield is
the home base of many planes used by government agencies and flown by
high-level military pilots -- who now are being vetted by low-level agents
from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). "Probably 98 percent
of our pilots have top-security clearance," says Wartofsky. "They're cleared
to a higher standard than the TSA people standing around watching them."
Even governors are considered suspect by the Bush administration. To be
eligible for a waiver to fly into National, a governor's pilot must undergo
federal security screening, and the governor must be accompanied by sworn
law enforcement officers -- the better to restrain a chief executive
suddenly seized by terrorist impulses. Do the luminaries who think governors
can be trusted with a National Guard but not with a private plane really
represent the best minds available to judge the safety of general aviation?
None of the restrictions the administration has imposed prevents terrorists
from taking off from fields or deserted highways and flying into restricted
airspace. But even in that scenario, the threat would be minimal.
A jet loaded with 17,000 gallons of fuel traveling 600 mph is a flying bomb.
A small plane carrying 50 gallons of fuel puttering along at 100 mph is not.
At 2,500 pounds, a Cessna weighs less than half as much as a Ford Explorer.
When a deranged pilot crashed a stolen Cessna into the White House in 1994,
he killed himself and mangled his plane but barely nicked the president's
residence.
So where are Virginia's leaders, who should be defending the airport's
interests? Why don't they demand that the administration stop hampering a
local industry by trumping a local authority?
The administration's usurping of power and resources is not justified by the
risk. Reagan understood what Bush does not: Centralized power is the real
threat to freedom.

Hi Listers,
As some of you may know, I have for sale a brand new in the box IO-360A1B6
ordered through Van's and delivered last December. One prospective customer
has some concerns about the warranty since Lycoming has said that there is a
one year warranty on the engine. I would like any information on warranty
claims that might have been made on a new Lycoming after the one year
expiration date. Let me explain by giving an analogous situation regarding
Porsche cars. The Porsche Boxster has had a history of problems with its
engine. In order to preserve its reputation and maintain good customer
relations, Porsche is replacing problem engines that are out of warranty,
even for cars that have been sold to a second owner. I wonder if there is
any history of Lycoming standing behind its product to a similar degree?
The value of the my engine certainly depends upon whether Lycoming would
deny a claim for warranty repairs, in say the first few hours of service, if
the engine were more than a year old. Any information on actual customer
treatment by Lycoming would be much appreciated.

Never use air pressure for pressure testing!!!! Air is very compressible and
stores lots of energy. An air filled balloon pops. A water filled balloon
just
leaks.
Use only water (best) or oil (messy).
A pressure test need only be done to 1.5 X working pressure.
i.e. oil pressure 75 psi X 1.5 = 112.5 psi

Speaking as one with a largely black airplane, there are a few other
effects. One is that after I pull the airplane out of the hangar into the
Sun, I am likely to get a couple of loud and disconcerting bangs as the
skins warm up. Another is that if the tanks are filled to too near full, in
the Sun, fuel will come shooting out of the vents intermittently, causing
FBO people to come running and yelling about the fuel coming out of your
airplane, thereby disturbing your lunch of vending machine peanut butter
crackers.
The black is hard to keep clean looking too.
Still like the black.

Just FYI, I've only made up one hose so far. But I took it to the local
airport's hose shop. They tested it for free. He said the paperwork

Yeah, I feel your pain. I've been searching for the same thing recently. I
have an older style, brass drain that looks like a scaled up tank sump
drain. It works, but dribbles oil. I even looked in the auto racing market
for a quick drain to no avail. There MUST be something out there that
doesn't cost fifty freakin' dollars.
OK, so I'm cheap. But fifty bucks buys me enough avgas for a month of
flying! (Toddler at home, wife works too, I work, old house with old stuff
breaking all the time....yada yada yada).

I bought the fittings and hose material from Van's,- 2-1/4", 2-3/8" and
2-1/2" for pressures, fuel and oil respectively and made them up ok. I took
them to an Aeroquip dealer in Montreal (that supplies a lot of hoses to
Bombardier, here) and they tested them for me. ($8 Can. each) They invited
me in to witness the test. The same size hoses were mounted in series in a
transparent test chamber and filled with fluid of some kind, and pressurized
to 3,000 PSI! And left for one minute! It was amusing to see the 3/8" and
1/2" ones "erect" under pressure. The technician told me that I had done a
good job because I had really tightened the nut into the ferrule so that
there was a tiny gap (<.015") between them and a lot of hoses fail the test
because that gap was not closed enough. Anyway, $48 Can. has given me full
confidence in them.

Well, I'm starting the "let's get together thread". Since I am new (one
year) to the RV list, but very old on the plastic airplane list, I would
truly like to put some faces to names to those on the dark side (alum.).
Bernie's idea of meeting for lunch provides me with a great lunch plan on
Sat. and Sun.
However, is anyone up for a "let's swap airplane lies" get together? The
regular airshow on Sat. starts at 2PM and ends and 5PM. I'd like to suggest
a gathering at the Van's tent 5PM Saturday and walk to someone's campsite
(even the parking lot if we have too) for a very informal beer and brats
Saturday evening dinner. The night airshow starts at 8:45PM for those who
will not fall over looking skyward after partaking in more beer than brats.
If we can pull this together, I will bring the grill and a couple large
coolers (I'm driving as I can't take the chance of a line of thunder boomers
moving in and missing work (CPA)).
For all you "pre pre-punched" guys who are flying I'd really like to hand
you a handful of dirt to see just how you mine the ore for spars and fit
that red cape Van's give you when you order that little wheel on the back
end.
Seriously, anybody up for it??

Well,
I don't know much about anything but I can tell you that black paint is a
lot hotter than any other color.
I have had several customers who owned black BMWs that often complained
about having to have interior work done all the time.
We stuck some calibrated temp recorders in the car and inside the dash area,
one of these reached 240 degress F on a hot 100+ degree day in the sun. The
car was so hot bugs were getting it confused with the sun and were going
inverted over it thereby augering into the paint to lie there and burn.
My plane and both cars be white. Or at least dirty white.

The "tooling" for my RV-4 filter drain is a whole lot cheaper:
1. Loosen and unscrew the filter about 1/4 turn.
2. Use and awl to poke a small hole near the aft end of the filter
can, just about at the transition from cylinder to dome.
3. Place a cottage cheese carton on the firewall shelf under the filter.
4. Rotate the filter so the oil dribbles into the carton.
5. Go away and do something else for about 5 minutes.

For what its worth, my partners and I in a Comanche 180 had to replace
both
the carby heat cable and mixture cable. In both cases, they were auto
parts
according to our LAME - (that's Aussie for A & P I think) based on the part
numbers
stamped on the outside. The dates said they were less than five years old,
and the failure occurred when the nylon inner cable had become so hot it
had seized up. One of us was extremely lucky to survive the in flight final
failure(happened
as he pulled carby heat coming on base leg). I know now why the
people in charge insist on genuine certified parts - in this case it was a
valid
reason. We had a minor heart attack when the two cables came in at A$700
including
taxes, but sometimes you just gotta pay the extra.

It was suggested to me that I use a simple automotive choke cable for the
carb heat cable. It is wire and I terminated it by passing it thru and
then wrapping it around the arm. Good for over 100 hours but I would
really like something more satisfying.

You probably mean "Sam James".
Sam James and his son (Will?) do a bit of fiberglass work. Sam has a
"Fiberglass 101" video even.
Same took wha I **think** was the old Barnard cowl (round circular inlets)
and improved upon it. He made and sold a plenum to go with it. Supposedly it
gets a little more speed due to less and/or more efficient airflow (drag)
through the cowl with just as good (or better) cooling.
Hope this helps.
p.s. If anyone is interested I still have a plenum with the circular inlets
that *think* I am willing to sell as I suspect I am not going to be willing
to do the extra work in a month or two.

nozzles seal well). You will see a lot more oil that was trapped in the
system and filter get blown down into the sump to drain out. Do this a few
times while you clean and gap your plugs and when you finally unscrew the
filter, it will be 99.44% empty. Don't forget to cut it open to inspect for
metal.

Cy, While I agree with the apparent over reaction by the present
administration in regard to a "General Aviation Threat" the following should
be noted:
1) Reagan being quoted by the most anti-conservative
paper in the country is a riot!
2) This is the same paper who attacks the Second
Amendment almost daily so their interest in
protecting our rights is a travesty.
3) Reading the Washington Post is similar in content to
the reading the "Pravda" in the cold war days.
Hopefully the Washington Post is on the same downward spiral
that CNN, ABC and MSNBC is in the current ratings against Fox News on the
War Coverage. The Homeland Security Department was set up by the Bush
Administration......WITH the overwhelming support of the Congress and
Senate....Democrats included!
I note the Pravda....err Post tends to lead the reader when
covenant, to attack the President directly instead of ALL the Branches of
Government who brought us the Homeland Security Department.
Was the Homeland Security Department a mistake....would have
made a better topic but unlikely to be approached by the Socialist
Washington Post.

Lycoming and Continental both make a profit on customers who purchase their
products and have ADs, you know.
Lycoming most recently sold engines with defective crankshafts. In some
cases, customers had to foot most of the bill for putting it right. In
most cases, however, they installed new crankshafts at their cost.

Go to Hayward. RHV is crowded and SJC is too and is expensive and

Hi Mick,
I think I met you at Oshkosh a few years ago at Van's dinner by the lake?
Anyway for benefit of everyone else since it is too late for you, the
cables are much cheaper if you get them from ACSpruce. I had to pay about
$350 for a throttle cable for my Debonair 5 or 6 years ago while the exact
same cable was about $60 at ACS. The clerk told me it was the same, made
by Cablecraft but sold without paperwork. For us experimentals that
paperwork is not needed.

I too will be at Sun-n-Fun, displaying my Sam James Cowl.
I will also have a photo album that I will show you... it documents the
tremendous amount of work required to put one of these cowls on an RV-6 or
7. (the 8 cowl is different, and apparently fits quite well).
My plane is very fast, and I'm sure the Cowl and Plenum make a big
difference, however, if you are thinking about doing this cowl for a 6 or a
7, you need to know that it does NOT fit out of the box... unless you use a
4" spacer for your NON-constant speed prop.... this is the way that Steve
Bernard made the original. It does not fit a 6 or 7 with a constant speed
prop. I have written much about this within this forum over the past 2
years... but if you are at Sun-n-Fun, I'll show you photos that will speak
volumes. Not trying to discourage this route exactly, just being honest
with the rest of the group about what types of skills and the work needed.

RE intermittant, bang on it, flap problem I was having.
Thank you oh great mecca God RV list, once again you were wise and
benevolent to the unclean builder.
The job took about two hours, flap motor brushes and commutator were black
with goop. Didn't seem like there was a source for the grease to be up there
as the rest of the armature and housing was clean and the upper bearing was
sealed. My question to the list is, is it possible they are assembling these
with some dielectric grease on the brushes? I've never heard of this being
done on a dc motor, but who knows. The other possibility is that the brushes
could be made out of an oilite type material.
There was absolutely no wear on the commutator or the brushes that I could
tell. They wiped clean and the gaps between each plate rinsed out with a
little alcohol and a toothpick.
For those doing it, not a big job, but, and its a little "but", getting the
micro springs loaded behind the brushes after installing the brush plate was
kinda tricky. It took three hands, one foot, my mouth and some long thin
pokey pushey tools. It might be easier to make a tube that holds them open
during assembly off the armature and lets them then be slid down onto the
commutator. This would require removing the upper shims and spacers.
Whatever you do don't lose them. There were five total. 2 steel, 2
rubber/plastic, and one rubberized/cloth against the top of the commutator.
I would also recommend getting your glasses prescription renewed prior to
this job if you are over 40. Some of those parts are really dinky.

Hi Jim,
What solution did you come up with, to still be able to use your Hartzell
CS-Prop with this Sam James Cowl?
I presume you have the short "Compact" Hub Design?

Just finished up all the Electrics on my RV6-A in the Hanger (garage) out back
and have a small Gremlin. Everything works including transmit and receiving on
both Comm's.
Symptoms are as follows after turning on the Master:
1) About a 15 Amp. discharge shown on the Amp. Gauge with
only the Oil Pressure Light and BC Regulator Charge light activated?
2) Everything works with no more discharge shown no matter
how many things are brought online?
3) Now it gets interesting........If I transmit on either
radio the following occurs:
a) CHT & EXT Gauges dance like crazy!
b) Amp Gauge goes Nuts!
c) Flap & Trim Indicators leds dance!
d) Fuel gauges advance very slightly even though the
wings and thus indicators are not hooked up?
The airport which is 3 miles away says I am transmitting crystal
clear even from inside my garage with a belly antenna?!?
Any suggestions of where to start looking would be appreciated as I don't
want to put the forward skin down till I get this fixed.

There IS a potential of blowing it back down into the sump, but consider
this. Anything captured by the filter becomes trapped in the tight internal
pleats under fairly high oil pressure (75 psi or so). Unless your engine is
producing substantial metal, I believe the probability of dislodging any
significant amount of material to any great degree thru the use of the very
low reverse air pressure I have recommended to be remote. You could use even
lower pressures if you were concerned about this. Further, if you had enough
metal that this would be a concern, there is the strong probability that the
filter might plug go into bypass anyway.
But, you are correct to point this out as a possible downside of the
technique I have mentioned. Therefore, I would caution against using this
technique if you know your engine is making metal, hence the need for regular
oil analysis.
