Guys, Can anyone tell me where the heck the fresh air vents work the best on
a 4?
I can't seem to get a real straight answer from the list archives or
from any other Rv owners. Could anyone help? This must be a problem for not
just me. What does Van's have to say on the subject? I don't need anything too
fancy I just want some FRESH AIR! Thanks, Jim Mandeville # 111

Jim-
On my recently completed -4 I placed one NACA vent on the left side of the
fuselage, about 5" below the top longeron and about 6" forward of the
instrument panel bulkhead, and another in the lower surface of the right
wing a la RV-8 with 2" ducting into the stick well in the back seat. They
work great! The front air system will blow you out unless you restrict it
somewhat. I haven't had any passengers yet in the back, but checking the
airflow there seems to be more than ample. As an aside, I used some elbows
and fittings from a residential central vacuum cleaner system to control the
direction of air and keep the bend radius manageable. They work just fine
with the 2" duct. Hope this helps.

For the rear seat, I copied the rv-8 and retrofitted with naca duct under
right wing feeding 2" ducting to a metal eyeball vent (whose name I can't
recall at the moment) mounted in the rear stickwell. For the front seat, I
have a 2" duct from the left cowl cooling air opening which runs up across
the top of the engine, through the rear baffle, through the firewall to the
instument panel where the eyeball vent (black plastic one from Van's) is
mounted. Both provide plenty of air flow, and I like being able to point the
front one right at my face (it's hot in south TX). The disadvantages of the
front vent are two-fold. First, the air is 3-4 degees warmer than the back
seat. Second, there is the hole through the firewall which would present a
potential problem in the case of an inflight fire. There are no
disadvantages for the rear seat set-up that I have found.
