Charlie, It's an RV4, I don't go around mountains, I go over them, unless weather
is a factor or they exceed the climb capabilities of my 4. Routing around valleys
in the Smokies in summer haze3 mile visibility with cables and cellphone
towers isn't as fun as looking down on them from above. Mt Mitchell is 6200'
and I have flown that route many times going out to Idaho. I recommend you climb
above 8K to cool smooth air brotherand press west...
I would check the TFR's, the weather enroute and climb to 8500' or 10,500'
and put your destination on the nose. You'll be above 8,500 about 50 miles west
of takeoff if you cruise climb...You do need Mode C above 10K and O2 above 12.5k.
I don't go anywhere in my RV4 below 8500' in the summer and it's VFR as well.
Just make sure you check the weather, have a plan, a GPS and go.

This VFR flatlander has flown from MS to Greensboro several times. If
it's clear, flying over is beautiful. Just remember that there's a
reason they call 'em 'Smoky'. It's stressful for me if there isn't much
margin between peaks & clouds. I've gone around a couple of times.
IIRC, the southern end of the pointy stuff isn't very far south of the
Charlotte class B. Probably wouldn't be a huge deviation, if needed.
