Ok, Tim, I have alot of experience with computers and I also ran into issues
with connecting my laptop to the 4000x for the first time, but I need to
know some more things about what you're doing when you try to connect.
A. Have you made the connection before, on your laptop or through another
computer, and had it actually work?
B. Do you know for sure that you're using a female to female serial cable
that keeps it's 'null' status?? very important.
C. Are you using any conversion parts to make the connections fit to your
computer or the 4000x?
D. What version of windows are you running?
E. Are you connecting with the stereo on or off, and is there constant
power supply to the EQ or do you possibly have a special power cap installed
inline that kills power after a certain amount of downtime?
F. Does your C90 recognize the 4000x?
It would really help if you just gave me a very clear rundown of what
exactly you are doing during the process. I'd love to do my best to help,
just need to know a bit more about what you've tried. If you're really
serious about fixing this issue, you could set up a time for me to give you
a call too. Hope I can help.

If I am not mistaken your Mistral tweeter was the inverted Kevlar, right?
If I where you I would have just kept it, the Kevlar tweet is much
smoother than the TN-51. I use the TN-46 which is the Kevlar tweet and I
have listened to lots of cars with the TN-51 and there is no way I believe
that it can touch the TN-46. The only Focal tweet that touches the TN-46
is the TLR's. I have found that with the TN-51's you have to cut down a
lot more frequencies than what you have to with the TN-46. I only have to
cut 1 frequency with my TN-46's and it has one me multiple show a long
with the IASCA World Finals. Just because it is Utopia, that does not
mean it is better! You have an awesome setup with the 165EX 3 way, you
just need the right gear to tune it all up with and it won't take much
playing with an eq to get you there as long as you are using digital. If
you ever want to get rid of that 3 way let me know.

Hey Guys..... Its time to revamp the system yet again. Currently i
have
all Focal Mistral line 165EX 3 way setup with a 6.5, 4, and tweet
(upgraded to
the TN-51 utopia tweet). I have recently got my hands on a pair of Vifa 4
ohm 8's that will be my new midbass drivers. These are the same drivers
out of
the Mackie Studio Monitors that go for $1500+ a pair. As far as a new
midrange i was looking at the PHL drivers at <A
HREF="www.phlaudio.com">www.phlaudio.com and raised a couple of
eyebrows. Does anyone have any experience with these drivers? Also the
Focal Audiom 6W is always an option as well... And last but not
least, any
ideas on a decent SQ Sub that can play very well with 350 to 400 clean old
school A/D/S watts? I sold my Class D piece of junk amp, and my now power
hungry
subs have been transfered to Home Theater Sonotube duty (shakes the whole
house). Anyway, any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Dan

Tim,
I would try this, I had to do this with my laptop once. Re Install the
software with everything all hooked up and powered on. Then go through
the steps when getting to the eq and xover settings. Then save them and
close and try to reopen them when you have the unit connected and powered
up. This is the way I did it every time in my car and it worked.

More than likely you have the wrong cable. If you have to use a DB9 adapter(EX
usb to db9) It may be faulty. Also the port on the 4000x may be faulty. What is
happening is the comis not recognizing connection.

Interestingly enough, i still have the TN46's that came with the set..... i
was going to put them in to play.... I still have everything relatively flat
with the XDP and still is crystal clear and natural sounding... there are
some peaks that i would like to tone down a bit, but need to buy a laptop
first.... The first step i will do is replace the 6K4402 with the Vifa 8.....
and
then continue to play.... but yes, overall i am still very satisfied, but always
keeping my eyes and ears open......... Just out of curiosity, what amps did
you/do you use? Thanks Jayson..

Ok I see now. The only frequency that I toned down on the TN-46 was the
upper 9-10k and that's with using a JL Audio 300/4 amp on my front stage.
I used the JL 500/1 on a pair of 10w3V2 and that worked just fine for sq.
Let me know if you ever want to part with the Focal speakers, I would be
very interested if so. I also had to tone down the 3-4k on the 6" mid
because of the crossover point between the mid and tweet. Let me know if
you need any assistance.

If you want to keep the full digital domain crossover (which would be
better) then I think you would be better off getting another amp to bi-amp
the front components. An XM-7527 (I THINK that is the model #) would be a
perfect match. Same amp design just in the two channel model.

As for the PhatBox, as far as I thought it was a hard drive, not a disc
player. Therefore it wouldn't support DVDs as it has no disc drive in it!
I don't think it will ever support DVDs unless they make a new unit with a
DVD drive in it and a video output. I think this is beyond what the PhatBox
people are looking to do. They just want to make HDDs that store MP3s
pretty much, not DVD players.

This was covered somewhat before, but I can understand it being difficult to
navigate through the archives...
The difference between the models is as follows:
XT-U400V and XT-U500V
-These models are of the same "generation".
-The U500V is the superior tuner as it offers 4-antenna input and therefore
diversity tuning.
(the U400V only has a single antenna input)
-The U500V has separate LCD and CRT outputs while the U400V has one output
with a switch. This is really of no consequence these days as the digital
LCD output won't be used unless you have one of the old Sony LCDs. The CRT
output is composite video (after using the appropriate cable to convert the
proprietary connection) and is used for the mobile LCDs of today anyhow.
-These models will display CUSTOM FILE (8 Character) titles for CDs and
Radio on your display screen/monitor.
XT-U400V and XT-40V
-These models are identical except the 40V is a generation newer.
-The 40V can also display MD-Text on the display screen whereas neiter the
U400V or U500V can do this apparently. This is only important if you have
or plan to add an MD changer, but still isn't a big deal even if you do add
one and only have the U400V--you just won't get the MD titles on the
monitor.
-Other than that the U400V and 40V are the same tuner.
-NONE of the three models can display CD-TEXT on the monitor as they do not
understand that "language" from the UniLink heads.
As you can see the XT-40V is the newest tuner that is compatible (and only
one of three anyway) and the U500V is the best in terms of TV tuning
capability.
As for the $150 (US?) price on the XT-40V that is pretty decent. If you
would like to buy my XT-U500V I can sell it to you for $80 US plus shipping
(Since I decided not to use it, I'm selling it for what I paid for it
really--which was a very good deal on the unit. I'm asking a little more
than I paid in US dollars because the Canadian dollar is up compared to
before so to even out what I paid the $80 US ends up being what I paid in
CDN dollars.)
I don't have anything but the tuner though. You'll have to pick up a
UniLink cable and wire the power yourself (the wiring pin-out is on the unit
itself anyway) and possibly that video cable (that isn't included with any
of the tuners anyhow).
Let me know if you're interested in the U500V...
Roland M.

From my experience in the car and home, I'd never mix tweets and mids from
different manufacturers. the timbre and sonic qualities vary so much
(subtly perhaps) that i think the overall 'cohesiveness' of the sound
suffers. So based on that, go with the Audioms.

yes, the one pitch sub, i know that pain. I too am looking to get a SQ
sub amp and subs. Unfortunately, it seems those in the car audio biz, for
the most part, say a sub is a sub. it's so hard to find car audio soundq
ppl.
it def seems 2x10 is the way to go.

Hello again,
Well, I have connected the phatbox to my "spare" C90R, but the sound is really
really soft (not loud at all). I have to put the volume at the maximum. But when
I play the internal sources like CD and tuner, the volume is too loud (because
I put it at maximum for the Phatbox)
What is the way to think here ? Should I adjust something in the phatbox ?
Hope to hear from you soon.
Best regards,

Ok Tim, from you answers it sounds like its just a cable issue. You have to
understand that you need to have a female - female, db9 - db9, null modem
serial cable in order for it to work. You can buy one for about $12.00 at
your local comp usa or circuit city or any major computer electronics store.
You said you are using a conversion terminal to make the connection. That I
am certain of is your problem. Once you connect a conversion piece to change
the end, you are basically flip flopping the wires around, losing the null
modem status. You should for no reason be using anything else than a null
modem serial cable, no other pieces or attachments, to make the connection.
The version of software you are using, 2.0 or 3.? doesn't matter. Honestly,
I've used both under windows 98 and xp and both work fine, and are exactly
the same. You need to look into getting the right cable, or you'll never
get it to work. I'm almost certain that is your problem.
I'd give you a call, but I don't know what time zone you're in, I'm in
central, so, if you need anything, let me know.
Bobby

The XAV-7W does indeed support UniLink however it is a UniLink MASTER
device. (i.e. It functions the same as a head unit). Connecting it to
another head unit (like the C90) would be the same as connecting two other
head units together--it wouldn't work. The XAV-7W's UniLink connection is
there because it can control UniLink SLAVES (e.g. CD changers).
As for the CD-Text on the XT-40V I'm just restating what someone else on
this mailing list has said. I've never used it to know but apparently
others have. If anyone can (perhaps again?) comment on this to help him
out, it would be appreciated.

Like John and Bobby have talked about already and judging by the fact that
he hasn't got it working yet, I'm willing to bet he might have a
"straight-thru" serial cable connecting the laptop and XDP. You'll need to
get a "null-modem" serial cable or a null-modem adapter (if you have a
straight through cable and don't want to buy a whole other cable) to make it
work. (This assuming you don't have a null modem cable).
