Plus they will modify to suit your personal requirements. http://www.aviationhelmets.com/ With regards to the speakers and microphone, Sigtronics makes the absolute best 300 ohm speakers. The db/audio level is much better than any other 300 ohm speakers out there. Also their M80H mic is designed for high noise environments, like helicopters and our type airplanes. --> Yak-List message posted by: Barry Hancock <radialpower@cox.net> FWIW, We all want a good deal on stuff, but take a long hard look at bargain hunting on safety equipment. Sure you can get quality stuff for less if you do your homework, which is what you're to be doing. However, consider that a helmet better work properly when you need it...that is, when your head hits the horizontal after you've egressed the airplane in an emergency. If you stop and think about it, that is the real reason we wear these things. Even the HGU-55 helmets (yes, I wear one too, but I'm switching to Gallet for this very reason) are not designed to withstand a major impact. In other words they are not designed to helicopter safety standards. The problem in the past has been that "helicopter safety standards" meant bulky and heavy...Gallet has changed that. The -55 is designed for jet pilots punching out, not warbird pilots jumping out. I guess it all depends on how you approach it. I have a friend that thought he was a great pilot and the plane he was flying was bullet proof...it was, after all, Russian. He cut a few corners on maintenance and tried to "cheap" it on safety equipment. The corners he cut put him in an in fight emergency, and "cheaping" it on safety equipment meant he was along for the ride. It was a long ride and I'm sure he had plenty of time to reflect on what poor decisions he had made, because they were now about to kill him. When our time is up, our time is up. I just don't want to foul out of the game before the final buzzer sounds...I have too many people depending on me. Happy Flying, Barry

In reality the motor in the tach indicator is more like a stepper motor. -- Brian Lloyd 6501 Red Hook Plaza brianl@lloyd.com Suite 201 http://www.lloyd.com St. Thomas, VI 00802 +1.340.998.9447 (voice) +1.360.838.9669 (fax) There is a time to laud one's country and a time to protest. RPM is one of those things where I happen to think that digital is superior to an analog "steam gauge" display. You tend to set it and forget it and your aren't looking for trends or making big sudden changes. As for the type of tach, there are a number that attach to the P-leads of the magnetos, something that makes installation easy as you just wire it to the mag switch. Probably the most popular is the P-1000 from Horizon Instruments. I'm ordering a helmet from him next week....they are expensive, but considering the cost of a survivable head trauma v. lessened or no significant trauma, I'll pay the extra money. They also have the best noise attenuation on the market, and are feather light. If you are in the market for a flight suit, or an extra for the GIB, you might want to check this out. Sportsman's Guide www.sportsmansguide.com is currently offering German AF Aramid (Nomex) flight suits (Stock # FX4X-83002X) for $22. These are new, unused, in sealed packages. I previously ordered two and the quality is excellent. With their European styling, they would look great with that Gallet helmet. Rich Desmond

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Frank Haertlein" <yak52driver@earthlink.net> Yaksters If postings to Matronics List Servers are any indication of activity and interest in specific areas of general aviation then the YAK-LIST ranks next to the RV-LIST in popularity. See it for yourself at http://www.matronics.com/graphs/ If I had to guess it's because YAKS/CJ's are indeed the biggest bang for your buck in aviation today! As a side note, was talking to an IA buddy of mine today while he was working to restore a Cherokee. Engine was out, fuel tanks were out, paint was stripped, windows were gone, interior was gone, etc. It got a real good look at the basic airframe. After working on my YAK-52 the last three years and comparing it to the Cherokee I came away with one, distinct impression of the construction of the Cherokee...... "overpriced crap"! I forget the name of the company he worked with. Jeff? Allen Silver is now a distributor as well. He's an ARS supporter and would probably work a deal with RPA members. His web site is http://www.pia.com/silver/. I'm ordering a helmet from him next week....they are expensive, but considering the cost of a survivable head trauma v. lessened or no significant trauma, I'll pay the extra money. They also have the best noise attenuation on the market, and are feather light.
