For a different style (i.e classic look) check out www.campbellaeroclassics.com
These use a leather outer over a kevlar shell with excellent headset built in.
Also available with an oxygen style face mask/microphone. Made in NZ and used

Yakers,
I bought my Gallet three years ago and have been VERY happy with it. I flew with
the HGU-55 helemt in the Air Force and MUCH prefer the Gallet.
Problems with the HGU-55:
I scratched visors regularly with the HGU-55 (not a problem when the taxpayers
were paying for it..but I'm cheap now). The Gallet has an internal visor with
a very low profile to fit under our canopies without getting scratched.
The HGU-55 gray color is very hot in the summer (touch it after its been in the
sun a while!)
The HGU-55 is much heavier than my Gallet.
The HGU-55 has more restricted head movement than the Gallet.
The HGU-55 has less visibility than the Gallet.
The Gallet also looks "Eastern Bloc-ish", and is rated better for crash-worthiness.
The only thing that takes "getting used to" is fastening the chin strap...you
will have to practice in the mirror a few times before heading out to the
airport (or lose cool points with your hangar buds).
Two hangar-mates have bought them and have been very happy- both flying T-6s.
It did take them about 4 weeks to get theirs though since they come from across
the pond. From the pictures, I noticed at least one other person at ARS had
one.
I bought mine from Merrit Apparel. Here's their website:
http://www.meritapparel.com
They are SUPER to work with and support the helmets. Ask for Rob. He, like Allen
Silver. is an ex-Air Force Life Support Technician. They use Oregon Aero
Zeta Liners, etc...

Been there!--- hovering at about 6-8 feet we were just finishing up
"helping" ARVN troops out the door of a H mod, LZ was heating up and the
last guy refused to leave. Short on fuel and options, the old man suggested
that I change his mind and help him out the door. We went out together, him
spread eagle and me with a 4 foot cord. Damn near broke my neck--I had to
lay around the pool with Australian nurses at the Ausi compound in Vung Tau
for nearly a week!
So, yes a breakaway system is very good thing to consider, good point Bill.
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

What ever helmet you get, make you your communication cords detach quick or
automatically ... my nightmare is I get part way out and get my neck broke
'cause I forgot to unplug my comm cords ...

At the risk of getting flamed by the (mostly US) members on the list,
just another US shopping site that does not ship internationally! It is
so frustrating. How can some folks (like aircraft spruce) get it right,
and then others get it so wrong and just find excuses?

Gang,
Barry is right on the mark regarding cutting corners on safety, but
sometimes
there are some real bargains out there. If you are in the market for a
flight suit, or an extra for the GIB, you might want to check this out.
Sportsman's Guide www.sportsmansguide.com is currently offering German
AF Aramid (Nomex)
flight suits (Stock # FX4X-83002X) for $22. These are new, unused, in
sealed
packages. I previously ordered two and the quality is excellent. With
their
European styling, they would look great with that Gallet helmet.

The one thing I forgot to mention, which is crucial to consider when
purchasing a helmet, is that they are NVG compatible. This is a must
for our night time raids on Sturgeon Bay prior to OSH. They've
obviously been pretty successful in the past because not many T-argets
are showing up there any more...... :)

Not the cheapest supplier, however they've got several items.

The Horizon Instruments Digital Tach is great. It can be set to show RPM or
%. It also shows instantaniously if you lose a mag and which mag. It keeps
track of hours as well, and easily connects to the P-leads on the mag.

I have the Horizon electronic tachs in my CJs and Bonanza. The CJs in %, the Bonanza
in RPM. Have had great reliability. They also act as Hobbs meters and
will tell you if one mag is starting to go South.
