Jon.
Its possible your pipes are weeping. Whats the age? I have experiance a "new"
pipe weep after 4 years. The date on the pipe material was 1991 and the
assembly date was 1996 and the failure was 2000. Pipe life should be 10 years
from manufacture and 7.5 years in service. This is for the Russian made pipe.
UK CAA say 6 years in service. Other countries differ and in the USA I belive
you can keep using till it fails, is that right? Its just down to the engineers
experiance to say change or not, in some cases I know that decision is made by
financial constraints.
I said "new" because its not unknown for some a/c suppliers to remove date tags
from pipes, paint the ends and say they are new yet the knolagable know that
the material has a date on it under the anti chaff slieve. One very well know
supplier got caught and lost a lot of business and reputation as a result of
his cost cutting measures!!
BR, mark J
BTW, any reputable supplier will be able to supply new marerial and pressure
test certificates.

I end flights with a bit of oil dripping from the inspection door on my
CJ-6 (285hp engine) where the oil lines are coupled... just inboard of the
wing root on the starboard side.
I've inspected the coupling and it seems to be OK... the oil lines
themselves are wet and there's 1/2 to 3/4" of sludge built up between the
bulkheads if I feel around with my fingers.
The oil lines are dry as they come through the firewall and then disappear
down into that cavity.
Is there a failure mode of oil lines where the inner portion of the line
begins letting oil drip out through the outer casing? More oil seems to
drip out at the end of flights that involve loops.
I'm only using about 1/2 quart of oil per hour of flight, or so, and I
haven't seen an increase to correspond with the dripping... it seems minor
so I don't suspect a cut in the line, just a slow failure.
Jon

Folks,
Due to some type nut loose on my keyboard, my computers register got screwed
up and my drive had to be reformatted. Hence I've lost a whole lot of my
files etc.
Bear with me while I play catchup.
Drew, would appreciate, you resend me that last e-mail with the newsletter
format.

Subject: | Shutoff valve CJ-6a |
--> Yak-List message posted by: Ronald Wasson <ronwasson@mindspring.com>
Just cleaned my shutoff valve of the rust on the the steel cone part of the
valve as it had started to leak. This was a new part put in three years ago.
The old valve was totally corroded and would leak some days then be fine
others. I sure liked no leaks for three years. Has anyone made a new cone
for the valve out of brass or stainless steel and stopped this rust problem.
Which metal would you suggest as I am going to have the machine shop do it.
Air leaks or at least from the valve forward will be a thing of the past on
a CJ.

Ron,
You might check with Doug Sapp. It may be cheaper
to buy a new valve than building a valve part.

New valve has a steel core that rusts and leaks within a few years. I
cleaned mine and it might be fine for a while. Doug sold it to me three
years ago and is new PRC air force part. I have old one that was removed and
has deep pits. The steel cone is only a very small part of the valve to
reproduce. One piece of 17 piece valve that is mostly aluminum castings. The
piece is a inch long by half inch wide. The steel pits in a circle at the
point of contact with the alum seat and the water from the pump.

Yakinators
There is an article on radial engines written by Fred Abramson. It seems
like a comprehensive article that I think should be required reading by
anyone who flies radial engines.
Some time ago I included the article on the YAK LINKS page
http://home.earthlink.net/~yak52driver/m14p.html
This article was linked some time ago and I have only recently learned
that Fred has passed on. I have no knowledge of Fred or where he stood
within the YAK community.
With all due respect to the departed, I'm hoping that someone here can
provide the list and myself a little history about this man.
Thanks in Advance

Get in touch with Bill Blackwell out in AZ (623-703-1001). His out fit made
up a stainless steel replacement valve. I've had mine for almost 4 years now.
No problems.
