Yakkers,
I know as you get back home from OSH and begin sorting through you backed up emails,
the last thing you want is someone pestering you about the next fly-in.
However, we are just 2 1/2 months away from Octoberfest in Selma.
So far 31 people have expressed an interest in coming to the Red Air Fall Fling
14-16 Oct. 05. However, only 2 have signed up with RPA events web page. I know
that all 15 of the rooms at the St.James have been reserved (taken). I do not
have a head count on the number of rooms left at the Jamison. I will find that
out Monday.
Please go to the RPA web page and sign in for the RPA 144 event. When you do,
it sends all your info to the event coordinator so we have an accurate head count.
It also gives us your training needs or your expectations from this fly-in.
If all 31 show, this will be hell of a birthday party for the October Babies in
the crowd.

I thought I'd post an incident which happened to me Friday on my way
back from OSH/MTW as something my fellow Yak Drivers should look for
on their m14's
Took off from MTW Friday with a wonderful tail wind, there's a first,
and landed in Gary for fuel. While in Gary one of the line guys
mentioned I had a bit of oil dripping out of the engine. My initial
thought was yes its a round engine your point. Then I took a look
and it was far more than a bit, in fact there was a rather large pool
of oil right behind the front wheel and it was getting larger.
To make a long and painful story short, got cowls off, washed down
the engine and before I could run it up to see if I could spot the
leak, it presented itself.
Turns out the oil return line coming from sensors to left side of oil
tank and a oil/air separator line that runs behind it were hard up
against each other. So hard in fact that the oil/air line had worn
through the oil line creating a hole in the oil line about 3/4" to 1"
long.
Fortunately, and here I have to thank a bunch of people, the fix was
fairly easy. Got the line off and got it spot welded wrapped the weld
and the section of oil line near the oil air separator line with anti-
wear so I could get home to NH. Now that I'm home that oil line is
coming off and unless anyone can tell me why it needs to be a hard
line it's going to be replaced with a soft line.
I've posted two pictures of the leak so others will know exactly what
to look for. I am hoping I am the only one with this problem, but I
find that hard to believe. You can see pix here: http://
homepage.mac.com/steve.fox/PhotoAlbum8.html
Now to all the thanks, The first group is Dennis Savarese, Harvey
Meeks, Cliff Coy and my brother Blitz. All of whom responded to my
somewhat frantic phone calls and gave me direction and much needed
moral and tech support.
My second and biggest thanks goes to Will Davis and his crew at Gary
Jet Center. His mechanics lent me tools and assistance when needed,
in fact they even cut a 30mm wrench in half , that belonged to them,
so I could get in behind the engine. Will Davis, the owner, drove me
over to a friend who could spot weld the oil line. Then they gave me
a crew car and made a hotel reservation for me for that night. What
did I get charged for? Oil and gas! So if you are ever flying in the
Chicago area please land at Gary and go to Gary Jet Center for fuel.
These folks without exception are the best!
Took off yesterday and burned three quarts of oil in six plus hours
of flying which is the best ever. So obviously this has been a small
problem for awhile and that finally got to be a big one!

Troops,
Well I'm heading south from OSH. I'm over nighting at "Wild Bill" Walkers place
in Sparta, TN. I had his son in the my back seat. The left gear over center
lock failed on Bill's 52TD during the landing in our part of the show. Very
little damage prop cowling and wing tip, so Bill came home in a friends T-34
and Eric came with me.
We got lots of compliments from different folks about our formations. Even the
FAA weather man single us out for a real compliment right during show briefing.
You could have heard a pen drop from the other groups.
Greg Eckberg got "Best Yak/CJ-6" award and he had competition this year!!!
We dearly missed Roger this year and quite frankly the the first few days there
wasn't very many laughs around our group. A good contingent of our group head
south for his services.
Rest a sure that he is held gently in God's hands.

Just when brother Steve had awarded this year's Escalade Medallion to Ron Lee
for the ride most pimped, up pops another craft from LALA Land which deserves
one as well. I would have thought Ron's chrome spinners on his main gear
would have swept the field, but when Greg fired up his massive sub-woofers and
performed his low-rider hydraulic jump for the assembled masses at OSH, he won
the day! Congratulations, Greg!!
I'm jealous, Blitz

I had to share this.
A U.S. Navy cruiser pulled into port in Mississippi for a
week's liberty. The first evening, the Captain was more
than a little surprised to receive the following letter
from the wife of a wealthy plantation owner:
"Dear Captain, Thursday will be my daughter Melinda's,
coming of age party. I would like you to send four well
mannered, handsome, unmarried officers. They should
arrive at 8 p.m. prepared for an evening of polite
southern conversation and dance with lovely young ladies.
One last point: No, Mexicans. We don't like Mexicans."
Sure enough, at 8 p.m. on Thursday, the lady heard a rap
at the door. She opened the door to find, in dress uniform,
four exquisitely mannered, smiling black officers. Her jaw
hit the floor, but pulling herself together she stammered,
"There must be some mistake!"
"On no, madam," said the first officer, "Captain Martinez
doesn't make mistakes."

Steve,
I would recommend keeping a hard line, as they are over all less prone to problems
then soft lines.
This is probably something we all need to take a look at on our aircraft, and
add to our annual inspections. It probably was not a problem for the Russians,
as they got rid of their aircraft at about 1000 hrs TT. I am sure over time
we will find more problems like this showing up as the fleet ages.
