Subject: Re: Yak-List: OSH/MTW
Forrest,
Not all the guys are staging out of OSH. I'm not up on who is staying
where. Because of a number of meetings and such, I am having to stay at
OSH part of the time. I know that a number of the RPA guys (6 that I
knows of) are staying in OSH because they're sharing an RV or house near
by. I believe Herb mentioned that some 25 airplanes have signed up.
That a goodly number particularly IF we can get all of them airborne for
the show.
It is OK to stay over at MTW and commute each day to OSH for the
briefing and show. A number of guys will (I do not know how many) will
stay at MTW. Doing a lot of large formation work out of MTW may be a
little difficult due to resurfacing (I've been told) of the main runway.
They will be down to a one runway operation.
The plan right now for Monday show where all the warbirds make a
simultaneous arrival into OSH and simply land - is for RPA to stage out
of MTW. Fly the show arrival and land at OSH. We will than fly back to
MTW after the show ends (or MAYBE get airboss to let us out early) and
watch Jurgis Kairys do his demonstration. Than its Roger's Memorial
dinner that evening there. I WILL NOT MISS THAT.
I erg all those who knew or flew with Roger to attended his memorial
benefit dinner. It is for a educational fund in Roger's memory and very
worthy of our support. Let Ashley know you're coming at (
pilotashley@gmail.com ). It's $100/ person at a first class place with
a guest speaker who you will instantly recognize. He is amazing.
The next day Tuesday we (me included) will fly to OSH for the briefing
and fly the show. That evening (1930) we are invited (need a head count
soon) to Baslers for a party. Those that need to get back to hotels in
MTW need to leave before OSH closes for the evening (2000?).
Me? I'm staying at OSH that night for :
1. I want to get drunk.
2. I have a personal meeting the next morning early.
Since there no show to fly the next day Wednesday (I've been told) I
may take in the exhibits or fly over to MTW, but I need to be back in
OSH that evening.
So I can't tell you where everyone is staying. Just that not everyone
wants to stay at MTW.
Leading pilots is not unlike trying heard cats but more like trying to
load wild rabbits on a flat bed truck.
Pappy
In addition to my posting 5 min. ago look at Herb Cousins postinjg
5/25/06 which indicates everybody is staging from MTW

Remove and replace the check valve on the firewall at the cross (+) where
the pop off valve is located. If you are looking at the cross, the pop off
valve is on the top, the air filter is on the bottom. The check valve on the
right side goes to the snot bottle. The check valve on the left goes to the
external air fill port. Replacing the check valve on the left, or you may be
able to clean the crud out of it to make it seal properly, will definitely fix
this problem.

OK guys here's the problem we just started experiencing. The main air tank
has a slow leak that will take 2 - 3 days to drain completely. We are pretty
sure it is leaking out of the valve that is between the fill port on the
side and the main tank. When I put my thumb over the port opening I can feel
it
begin to build pressure and leak out. The real tell tale is that when I
take the cover off of the port on the side it is pressurized and "pop's off".
The emergency air tank has no leaks at all and holds pressure just fine.
We have flown it with the leak and the tank fills right up and it fly's
fine. It seems we had this problem before but it worked itself out on it's own.
Anybody seen this on theirs?

Elmar,
I really don't think they exist except in the military overhaul facility in
China. I have been trying to find a set for 5 years now and have offered
all my vendors $2,000.00 for a set, with no joy yet. The only engine manual
out there is the "Maintenance and Service Instructions for Aero engine
Huosai-6A" It is a great maintenance and service type manual, but is not a
overhaul manual.

I originally installed mine right side above heat muff. Bad idea. I
was getting smoke through the vent. I have since installed new
Exhaust Tech stainless exhaust system on my 52 and kept on right side
but just below the heat muff and it works great.
For smoke system contact John at Smoking Airplanes - http://
smokingairplanes.com. If your friend is a member of RPA they'll get
$50 off a system.

No problem, hasn't been covered at all. Changed cause mine was shot,
clamps and joints were in bad shape and getting exhaust leaks so I
was going to make the change. Then I had a minor on the ground
incident with a Seneca and the tips got mashed. So the switch was
further required. This new exhaust is fantastic, all the joints are
slip joints so no clamps everything is a bit tighter and my exhaust
leak is gone.

I do believe that the TW has a stainless steel exhaust already with the
M-14p.
Only the CJ-6 with Chinese HS-6 engines came with very poor plain steel
exhaust systems. To me they are plane un safe. They rusted out VERY easily and
were a real fire hazard. However they can be replace with stainless steel
ones. There are various schemes to do that.

Gentlemen,
here comes again that so often
exhausted question about the right
oil for the Housai engine.
I put in one year 200 hours on my
CJ and used like the previous owner
the Phillips 66 25-60 oil.
Now my new AME (who was raised
and trained in East Europe) told me to
not use the Phillips oil on those engines.
According to him, the Phillips oil is designed
for American Radial Engines and will do more
harm than good to the East-Bloc engines.
His recommendation is the Aeroshell W100 Plus,
the closest oil to the specs of Housai, M14 series,
M462RF, etc.
What do you think, your opinion is much appreciated.
cheers

list please.
2) Pappy, you want a count for Basler's on Tues. Who's invited, just
airshow pilots or ??
3) What is Jurgis Kairys doing and when? I assume it will be @ MTW.

Most everyone I know that uses Philips 25W-60 has told me their oil
consumption is less and their engines run much better year round with this
multiviscosity. This is particularly true during the colder months. Most
engine wear occurs immediately at start up. In the colder months when oil
pressure takes a few seconds to reach normal pressure, this is the time when
wear occurs. The 25W-60 helps reduce wear. If the oil you are using
remains on the moving parts for a longer period of time, then wear will be
reduced. Personally I would not go back to Aeroshell 100W unless of course
I could not get the Philips.
On the M14, one of the reasons the engines typically use about 1 quart per
hour is because of the very loose tolerances between the piston and the
cylinder wall. Lycomings and Continental engines typically are between 4
and 8 thousands, if I am not mistaken. The M14 (and probably the Housai
engine as well) has about 20 thousands between the piston and the cylinder
wall. If the tolerance was down to about 8 thousands you'd probably only
use a quart every 4-5 hours.
Better lubrication is good for our engines and I am 100% convinced the
25W-60 provides better lubrication and protection against wear for our
engines.

Whenever I use the multi grade oils, my engine (now 1,200 hours since new )
M-14p gets oil leaks. I've been using Mobil 100 or 120 since day one. I do
know guys who really feel the multi grades are the best. I truly do not
know.

I'll raise my hand to that.

I understand that RPA is invited. I just need to get some idea of how many
are going.
3) What is Jurgis Kairys doing and when? I assume it will be @ MTW.
I understand he'll be demoing at MTW Monday afternoon.
