Don't know much about strobes, but in past threads Aero Flash owners have
complained about the units going bad. Some reported that the factory told
them that was because the unit had not been used frequently and that the
unit had to be returned to the factory to have the capacor replaced.

One enterprising sole drilled the rivets on the power unit, went down to his
local electronics repair shop and replaced the capacator for about $5.00.
Of course this is a no no on a certified aircraft.

Unfortunately, while my dad and I wrote the article for Water Flying, they
didn't include any pictures of our CH-701 with our text. Pictures of our
airplane at Oshkosh this year can be found at
http://www.edwintech.com/ch-701.htm . If anyone has questions about the
CH-701 on floats, we'd be glad to gives the insights we have from the past 3
      years.

I have some additional information on this. I purchased an old but never
installed or used system. I think it was around 8 years old when I installed
it in 1995. It worked fine for 4 years. Then on the right wing the flash
unit slowed to less than 1/3 the rate of the good one on the left wing. Also
      it was quite dim.

I purchased a new flash tube because it was the easiest thing to do. It
didn't help as the performance remained the same. I flew for a year not
using the system because I had thoughtlessly built the power supply into the
wing with no access to it.

I finally bit the bullet cutting the fabric and building an access door for
futher maintenance. I pulled the power supply and drilled out the cover
rivets to examine the system. Everything looked fine visually so not being
skilled a trouble shooting it I just opted to purchase a new unit for some
      80+ dollars.

The new unit works fine. I still fly with the original on the left wing
( no access hole either) when it fails I will make a new access door and
will drill the holes and check and replace the Capacitor. Though I do
know electronics from 30 years ago I am not current to chips etc. I do
understand the capacitor and the fact that it is charged up to lots of volts
and then discharges thru the tube making the flash. It make sense to me
that this is a component that can fail and could easily be the the
component that could cause the symptoms my unit displayed. ( slow to charge
and then not having a full charge a dim flash).

Hope this all helps some. ( remember dont install anything the moves or has
a life without access to it).

      Hi Dave,
I downloaded the trouble shooting info, to find that it says to use a 25%
reduced voltage to charge the power supply.

Not having that capability, I called the AEROFLASH TECH SUPPORT number,
(312)733-3513 EXT 121, and talked with Lisa.

Lisa advised that the procedure to charge the PN 152-0011 power supply, as in
      the Zenith kit, is,,,

      1. DISSCONNECT the wing tip flash tubes, from the power supplies.
      2. Input 12 volt power [battery] for 5 min. This charges the capacitor
without it discharging, like with the flash tubes connected.
      3. Power off. Wait awhile like it says on the power supply [I added this
      step].
      4. Connect the flash tubes to the power supply.

Lisa advised not to try to use a battery charger for power, as I had asked
      that question.

Lisa said to pass the word that those with questions about charging the, long
time not in use power supplies, can call her at the Tech Support number.

My advice is to call her. I was in the aircraft tech support line way back
when,, always good to talk with the current expert before proceeding.

She was of great help, and knew exactly what the problem was.

Hope this helps with the charging question.

      Frank,
It seems that if these power supplies have the need for recharging after
periods of non use,,, that it would be useful to do the recharge as a standard

maintenance action,,, before returning them,, or putting them to use?

In the absence of other information, that is what I plan to do.

Also, it would be good to learn how to maintain/repair the power supply.

      Hi,

I'm new to the list so please excuse if this has been hashed
out, but I didn't see much in the archives. I have only recently
started looking at the 601XL now that it has the dual stick
option. Before I was mostly leaning towards the RV-7A; but, I
think I'd have an easer time with the pulled rivets.

What kind of speeds can I realistically expect with 160 HP? 180
HP? I'll build light with night VFR instruments only. I am
thinking of a Mazda rotary or Eggenfellner Subaru. My
requirments are 150 MPH cruise and use of a 1600' runway with
      trees at the end.

Have builders built up a fastback fuselage to decrease drag? The
wheel pants on the factory photos are bulbous and I bet Van's
would add a few more MPH. Any common cowling or fairing mods?

      thanks for the input,
      Chuck

      Chuck -
Not sure what to tell you - but I think you can expect terminal velocity
as 180 horsepower exceeds the recommended max of 125hp by a stiff margin..

Looks like you better head back towards the RV. First, I don't think the
airframe is rated to handle 180hp. Second, as someone joked earlier, the
only way the XL could make 150mph is with the engine off flying straight
      down.

Seriously, with those requirements, I think you're probably gonna be
      bucking lots of rivets.

      Dear Listers,

First, I would like to thank everyone that has so graciously already made a
Contribution to support the Email Lists this year!! Thank you!

That being said, I'm hoping that everyone else is just waiting until the
last minute to make their Contribution... The percentage of List members
making a Contribution is well below last year at this time. Was it
      something I said...? :-)

There's only a few more days left in this year's Fund Raiser; please help
support the continued operation and upgrade of these Lists by making a
      Contribution today.

You might look at it this way; surly the Lists are as entertaining as a
typical magazine subscription - maybe more so because you can actually make
your personal opinion known as well as ask questions of the "experts"! A
year's subscription to Kitplanes, for example, is $30 -- and you only get
it once a month! You can get nuggets of goodness from the List almost
every day as well as on-line search 14 year's of Archives! Your Lists
subscription is certainly worth a similar amount, isn't it?! :-)

Won't you please make your Contribution today!

| Subject: | does anyone have photos of unloading a 601XL crate? |

      --> Zenith-List message posted by: xl <xl@prosody.org>

I'm making a photo record of the construction process.
But, I do not have any footage of unloading the crate from
the UHaul box truck that I picked it up in.
I was single handed and the photos slipped.
I can get pictures from the zenair site of the crates
being loading for shipping. But, I don't have any unloading.

I know -- it may be absurd. But I'd like to get surrogate photos.

      Thanks, Joe
