anyone that is interested... I picked up #2 welding cable (per William
Wynne's suggestion for my Corvair engine) for use as battery leads for $1.20 a
foot at my local welding supply house. I did not check with an electrical supply
house, but thought this was reasonable in cost. Fine stranded and very
flexible.

I am working on my electrical system design on a 601
XL. Is it "normal" to have a breaker or fuse for each
load in the system, or can certain things be grouped
under one breaker? Does each wire fed by a breaker
have to be able to take the full breaker's load
capacity? For example, my elevator and aileraon trim
motors each call for a one amp breaker, plus the
position gage for each calls for a one amp breaker,
totaling 4 one amp breakers for just the trims. Can
all of these be protected by one, 1 amp breaker? Or
would the operational load of running both trims at
the same time blow the breaker? Or would putting all
of them under one 4 amp breaker exceed the wiring
capacity so the wire would burn instead of the breaker
at some point? What things are generally grouped
together under one breaker? I assume the three nav
lights? Are the landing light and the taxi lights
grouped under one breaker?
Or are there books around that go over these types of
designs? I am also having trouble deciding what size
breakers to use for certain units. Some of the
electronic elements give power usage in watts. Can I
calculate the amperage needed for a unit based on 13
volts and then provide a slightly larger breaker to
handle the start up load? Or do I need to hire an
electrical engineer?

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Schemmel, Grant" <Grant.Schemmel@Aeroflex.com>
Okay, I'll chime in here I guess. My 601HDS is using a Continental O-200, and
uses only the two leading edge wing tanks for fuel. I would agree with the engine
wt.+accessories being about 250 lbs. I ended up with an empty weight of
about 740lbs. My W&B came out perfect though, by putting my two 13lb Panasonic
batteries about 30" behind the seats. I declared my gross wt. to be 1300lbs,
so with the 21 gal. of fuel I have, it gives me 434lbs of people/baggage weight
(at full fuel).
I ended up making my own engine mount based upon the ZAC drawings they supply,
but if you go this way, watch out for the engine offset specified in the drawing.
Their drawing is based upon a VW engine, which rotates the opposite direction.
So the offset specified in the drawing was opposite what it should have
been. I ended up scrapping the first version of my engine mount because of that.
If you decide to go that route, let me know and I can probably scare up
my drawings for you, as the mount/firewall attach method is better than ZAC's
(IMHO).
As to performance, I'm using a 3-blade 68" Warp Drive prop and only have fairings
around the gear boxes so far, so it's very draggy. At my elevation (5440'),
and prop setting, I'm getting about 400'/min. climb at or near gross. My absolute
top speed right now is about 116mph/GPS @7000', at which speed I'm turning
about 2600rpm. Cruise at 75%, or 2500rpm gives about 104mph/GPS. Fuel burn
at cruise is the predicted (per engine manual) 5gph, which I consider acceptable.
Overall, I'm fairly happy with the installation, even though what with the complete
overhaul I did (personally) I probably have $10K in the engine.
Hope this helps some.

Hi Chris
Ray Lasnier reckons from the manual which is vague
the 0 200 Weighs about 250 lbs with accessories.
Will weigh and let you know actual weight in a few weeks as the engine will
have to be removed to move plane to airfield.
Beleive the all up weight will be about 730 lbs Ray is currently painting
the wings & on completion will assemble plane completely in workshop for
inspection & final weight & balance check.
A drawing is available from zenith for the engine mount but you will have to
make one yourself & also make your own cowel

Hi I am a prospective 701 builder. I am looking for some basic performance
figures of a 701 with the rotax 100 hp engine and floats. I am most
interested in speed, range, service ceiling and useful load. I also know
there are two different types of floats available (the ones with 4 wheels or
3) I have a house at Lake Tahoe where this plane would be based. It is at
6000'. It is also surrounded by 10000 foot peaks. Ideally I would like to
use the plane to commute the 300 miles to my other house, once in a while.
Density altitude can be a major problem because the temperature in the
summer can get hotter than 80 degrees. So please let me know if you guys
think the 701 fits the bill.
Thanks,

Don, it's funny that you should ask these questions right now. I was watching my
DVD of "Electrical Wiring 101 for your Homebuilt Aircraft" and I opened up a
new window to check my email and found your questions. You can go to:
http://homebuilthelp.com/wiring101.htm
and find a very good DVD that answers your specific questions and much more. I'm
not even finished watching it and it has helped me a lot.

The primary function of a fuse or circuit breaker is to protect the wires in the
circuit so they won't be overloaded and start a fire so, any wire fed by a fuse
must be able to handle the full rated current of the fuse so that the fuse
will fail before the wire in case of a short circuit.
Some of loads in your system should have their own breaker or fuse while some others
can be grouped on the same fuse. For instance, each of your radios should
have its own fuse so that a single failure doesn't take out too much or your
communication and navigation capability. On the other hand, you can safely group
your nav lights, cabin lights and panel lights on the same fuse as these are
not saftey of flight items (you'll carry a flashlight as a backup). You can
also put the landing and taxi lights on one fuse as long as the fuse can handle
both loads and the wire to each light is rated for the full load of the fuse.
Since the typical aircraft landing light draws a relatively large current,
it may or may not be cheaper to put them on seperate circuits and use smaller
(less expensive) wire. For your trim systems, if you're talking about the MAC
servos, your could probably run them both off a single one amp breaker. It's unlikely
you will run both at the same time and they d
on't use anywhere near one amp each, the indicators are leds and only use a few
milliamps. I have a seperate one amp breaker for each of my trim servos just
so I can disable either one seperately, my indicators are hooked into my instrument
guage circuit which is also fed by a one amp breaker.
A lot of good information is avaliable at the aeroelectric connection website:

Thanks very much Mike for the information on the
design of the 601 XL wiring. I would appreciate it if
you could semd me the addresses of example wiring
diagrams to use for the EXP buss. That would be a big
help plus the info you already sent to me. Now I have
some ideas where to start. Did you happen to use the
Dynon engine and navagation systems too? I would like
to use them to minimize my power requirements and
eliminate the need for a vacuum system. And how about
the XeVision HID landing and taxi lights?

Joe,
Check out:
http://corvaircraft.com/
and look under FAQs. There's a section there about identifying your engine
and it describes what you need. I've also looked around William's site:
www.flycorvair.com and I'm sure some of the same information is there also,
but I couldn't find it right away.
In case you didn't know, there is also a Corvair mailing list similar to
this one. You can subscribe at the corvaircraft site also. Good stuff.

Take a look here:

But I would get William's manual before buying anything - you could
easily save the cost of the manual.
