It does look like a model considering the proximity to the runway and size of the "smoking hole". --> Zenith-List message posted by: Steve Hulland <marinegunner@gmail.com> Very interesting presentation. Somehow I am not surprised abouit what caused this crash, nor am I supprised about what may have prevented it. During my 45+ years involvement with aviation I have read about and been involved with a number of incidents, accidents and crashes - almost all have a common thread. We humans do not always follow the safety rules and procedures that we develop. I set up this model for my EA-81 Turbo. You can change the HP, prop, gear ratio or anything to match your application. The airfoil is not correct since I didn't have the information necessary to make the GA 35-A-415 airfoil that the 601XL uses. I picked the 2412 as being fairly close. Have fun, Herb DO NOT ARCHIVE Hi Herb, How can I get my hands on those files (Zodiac> 2.acf and Zodiac 2_paint.bmp) Thanks, Josh Lazar 1-514-233-3251 Montreal, Canada

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Dan Wilde" <eagle51@ix.netcom.com> I am using zinc oxide and also have had some plugging of the spray nozzles. Soaking the nozzle in MEK works some of the times but the other problem is plugging at the can itself. Pouring a little MEK (or other solvent of your choice) into the top after removing the nozzle has almost always cured the problem for me. I threw away a couple of spray cans before I learned this trick. I found that SKYGEEKS.com is very reasonable in price for this stuff. Dan Wilde 701 - now putting wing skins on

--> Zenith-List message posted by: <PAULROD36@msn.com> I too would love to have folding wings. The best designed are on a WWII Navy fighter, I think the Hellcat, where they rotated (leading edge down) about 90 degrees, and then folded back along the fuselage, with the wingtips over the horizontal stabilizer. I've figured out the overlapping skins, and the rear spar, but little things like the fuel lines, control cables, and the rotating-bending main spar joint are a bit more challenging. Anybody out there got an idea? Considering I get 3-4 batches of parts days apart from the same can, I don't see a problem. I invert and spray until clear after using, then just stick the can under my workbench. Maybe you aren't shaking enough. I get the ball moving and count 100 clicks before spraying. The only difference I notice is that instead of the rough, opaque finish you get from Chromate, the Oxide is relatively smooth and translucent, unless you really load it on. --> Zenith-List message posted by: Jack Russell <clojan@sbcglobal.net> I consider myself a expert at tempo zinc oxide spray cans since I have sprayed through about 24 of them. I had a lot of problem with the nozzle until I discovered that once it plugs in the midddle of your spray you can remove the nozzle and very very very gently place it back on the can it will spray just fine again (you may have to remove and replace several times but it will work). I ended up doing this to every can for about the first quarter and then the last of the contents would spray fine. I never turned the can upside down. As long as the can was spraying strong when I stopped it would go again the next day. Jack inbetween clovis and Los Osos CA.

I asked my wife to help me turn the wing over, and she is too small to pick up the wing and turn it over. How have you guys turned your wings over? Have you removed the leveling blocks and set it down on the clecoes holding the top skin on without damaging the skin? I just moved to southwest Iowa and don't have anybody around here that can help me. Don 601 XL

--> Zenith-List message posted by: Bob Miller <tutuzulu@gmail.com> Herb, Many thanks for making a 601 X-Plane. It's a terrific program, but it took a massive amount of work on your part to build a 601 for us. When I clicked on the file, I got a screen full of numbers and letters. Should I do a "Save Page As" to the X-Plane file, or is there another intermediate step? Bob PS I'm gonna leave your message on this one, and let it archive. When people discover what a valuable contribution you've made, they'll want to know how to access it. > > Have fun, > Herb > > DO NOT ARCHIVE > > Hi Herb, > How can I get my hands on those files (Zodiac> 2.acf and Zodiac > 2_paint.bmp) > > Thanks, > > > Josh Lazar > 1-514-233-3251 > Montreal, Canada > > > > > > > -- Bob Miller 601HD N722Z Charlottesville, Virginia

Where there is a Cleco holding up weight it will bend the skin and leave a mark that is very difficult to fix. Subject: Re: Turning wings over on the bench and other handling methods
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Robert Schoenberger" <hrs1@frontiernet.net> Don . . . as construction continues, one gets more ingenious about handling large parts. For the wings (701), I took a large poly tube slightly smaller than the lightening holes in the nose ribs. If your space is limited use two tubes with a joint in the middle with a total length about 4' longer than the length of the wing. Just make sure the dia. is such that the tube doesn't get stuck. My tube extended about 2' beyond each end of the wing. Up in the ceiling, I installed some heavy screw eyes in the ceiling joists (I'm working in the basement) in line with these end sections and about the middle of the table. Tie a loop knot (bowline?) around each tube where it extends beyond the ends of the wing and feed the rope up through the screw eyes. You may also want to tie a safety line between the two ropes to prevent them from slipping off the tubes. I think I also put about 5 or 6 clamp straps around the wing tightened slightly to keep the nose skin from flapping around. With your wife guiding the training edge, you then pull EVENLY on the two ropes, and when the wing is raised and hanging in a vertical position high enough to clear the table (check this first before even starting this operation), your wife then goes to the other side of the table, grabs the trailing edge, and starts to pull it over in the reverse position while you slowly lower the wing so it's now on the reverse side. Do NOT set the wing down on the push end of the clecos. I got some 3" x 3" steel table tubes from a metal supply house and laid them across the table so the clecos would clear the surface of the table, similar to those used in the ZAC workshop and as shown in the photo assembly guide for the 701. I would never get steel again as they are too heavy - aluminum would be much better. If you use this method, make sure you clear a "path" devoid of clecos near the ribs for where the wing will rest on the table tubes near the ribs. It looks scarey to have your valuable wing suspended in a vertical position above the table. At this point, quietly say, "Please Lord, whatever you do, don't let the ropes break." He won't. Check your alignment once it's turned over. I didn't have any problem in this regard. The wing isn't heavy, only akward. I think this method is a lot safer than having a not too strong person as a helper where the wing might get away from him or her. I also put some cleats on the side of the workbench so I could tie off the suspended wing should something go wrong in the middle of everything and to lower the individual ropes about 4" at time. I have also found that by rolling up the skin sheets and carefully reverse unrolling them it is possible to handle the skins alone. This is useful in deburring the reverse side, etc. I always wear saftey glasses in this operation in case the skin get away and acts like a coiled spring. It's helpful to put a spring clamp on the rolled up skin to hold the roll together. When working on the fuselage, if the longerons are on both sides of a rear skin, it is easy to slide the skin off the table and hold it in a vertical position. Be careful of the splice. If the longeron is only on one side, then take a 1" x 3" x fuselage length board and cleco it (in many places) to opposite edge without a longeron to achieve the same effect. Your wife can get on one end and you on the other to turn the skin around and/or over. Hope this helps. --> Zenith-List message posted by: "David Alberti" <daberti@sbcglobal.net> Do not set it down on the clecos! You will get little dents in the skin that will be hard to remove. Some may look like little smiles but you will not be smiling. You can support the wing in between the clecos using moving mats (blankets) and 2 x 4's to keep the clecos from touching the workbench. Dave .....turned your wings over? Have you removed the leveling blocks and set it down on the clecoes holding the top skin on without damaging the skin? All I asked was I needed a quick hand in flipping over a bulky item. He was over in a shot. Make sure anyone who is not a builder gets the Spar root section; this will limit the chance of damage. SO my advice is to go and knock on a door it is a great way to introduce yourself to your neighbors, they will either think you're really intelligent (building your own plane!) or a complete whack job that the squirrels won't even touch (building your own plane!) cdngoose do not archive -----Original Message----- --> Zenith-List message posted by: Don Mountain <mountain4don@yahoo.com> I just finished riveting up the bottom skin and the bottom side of the leading edge skin on one of my wings on a 601XL.
