Subject: Fuel System Improvements & NPT vs AN sizes...?
From: "PatrickW" <pwhoyt@yahoo.com>
I'd like to go with all AN fittings and braided stainless steel fuel lines, instead of the supplied barbs, hose clamps, and rubber lines. Question: what AN sizes match what NPT sizes...? For example, starting at the 601XL wing tank, there is a "finger screen" (part number DX2021) that is female threaded, into which a "1/4 NPT nipple coupler" (part number F-125-4B) is threaded. Which AN fitting would replace the "1/4 NPT nipple coupler". I bet somebody on this list has already done this. Does anyone have a parts list so all of this can be ordered at once? Thanks, Patrick 601XL/Corvair Tail Done. Wings 50% Engine 50% Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=109150#109150

I have often wondered about the "floats develop lift that counters their extra weight" thing. Often when I see a 701 float installation, it looks like they are at a negative incidence with respect to the wing, so that when planing in proper trim, the wing is at some modest positive angle of attack for liftoff. In the oldest 701 installations it looks like the setup put the floats in a significant down angle (negative angle of attack) in flight, which looked to be developing negative lift if anything. Anyone else have thoughts? Bill Mileski 701 912S 89hrs Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=109158#109158

From: "billmileski" <mileski@sonalysts.com>
I have a cheap non-TSO'd old-style compass on the top of my panel (screwed onto the top of the glare shield). When installed, it read 15 to 30 degrees off in all quadrants, and worse, the error varied +/- 5 degrees depending on the fore-aft position of the control stick. I flew 50 or so hours without doing anything about it and ignoring it, assuming it was an ornament. Then I planned for my first significant cross country (up into New Hampshire and VT from CT in the winter) and decided I needed a backup plan in case the GPS I was way too addicted to had a problem. Long story short -- I swung the compass while parked on an airport compass rose, and held the stick at cruise position (top surface of elevator horizontal) during each adjustment. The compass is only meaningful in unaccelerated flight anyway. Turned out to be accurate to within a degree or so, and I have practiced navigating by it, with surprisingly good results. I think AC43-13-1B recommended running the engine while adjusting, and I did notice the compass drift a couple degrees after starting the engine at the compass rose. So give it a shot before assuming like I did that it's too bogus an installation to get usable results. I have a 701 on Czech 1200A floats. The floats are set at a 3 degree down angle so that you can more easly rotate off the water. I increased the gross weight by the difference in the weight of the removed gear and the new weight with the floats. (About 150 lbs on the 701) My gross is 1250 now. But please note at full gross it will not peform like a 701 on wheels! There is more lift but also a lot more drag! That's not to say it's a poor float plane ...it's a very good float plane but the lighter the better. (Time for me to go on a diet!) I had to do a lot of modifications to get it to cruse at 95mph (5500RPM) with a 912s. I often fly it at 80 to save gas. Starting on page 111 of the latest Aircraft Spruce catalog, there are pictures and charts of AN fittings. Or you can go to http:// www.aircraftspruce.com/ and click on the "hardware" link and then the "AN fittings" link to get to the same information online. I would highly recommend ordering one of their catalogs, they're free and contain lots of good information. NPT fittings are specified by the nominal inside diameter of the pipe and hose fittings are specified by the inside diameter of the hose. AN fittings are specified by an "AN" number (AN followed by 3 digits) to specify the type of fitting, followed by a dash and a number that specifies the outside diameter of the tube in sixteenths of an inch. for instance, to go from the 1/4" female NPT on your finger screen to 3/8" OD tubing you would use an AN816-6 fitting. If you were using flared tubing with that you would use an AN818-6 coupling nut with an AN819-6 sleeve. > > I'd like to go with all AN fittings and braided stainless steel > fuel lines, instead of the supplied barbs, hose clamps, and rubber > lines. > > Question: what AN sizes match what NPT sizes...? > > For example, starting at the 601XL wing tank, there is a "finger > screen" (part number DX2021) that is female threaded, into which a > "1/4 NPT nipple coupler" (part number F-125-4B) is threaded. Well Sometimes we all slip and send a personal message to this list, so I will make my reply to Jon, public in case someone was curious to the answers. I will be giving the final tally on the BBQ later this evening. For now I have to run off to the wielders and to look at a new hanger. The BBQ was a success and no Jon you don't need to send me more money, your donation along with all the others have covered the event, if we don't count the fact that Rick Roberts went out and bought two new BBQ's specifically for the event. Once again list I will put out a complete E-Mail later. Jon as for the 750, yup you can see it at Zenith, but remember it has never flown, IT's main mission is able to support the heavier engines while retaining a similar useful load of the 701. Nevertheless, as in all things I can't imagine that they will be able to retain the same EXTREME STOL of the 701, it will likely be a blend between the 701 and 801. We'll see, there is no guarantee that the 750 will ever become a production kit aircraft. It is just one plane that has progressed from the drawing board, like the Gemini. If they are happy then it may move forward, if not then it may be refined/re-built differently or shelved, who knows? I go the DVD's upon my return home from Sun-N-Fun. I still laugh my ass off on the Oshkosh dinner one. I will review the controls DVD this weekend in the shop. I can't remember everything in the controll kit but I do remember that I ordered it at the same time as the fuselage after I had completed the wings. You do need during the fuselage construction. Plus, if you order it at the same time as the fuselage you will save probably $30- $40 in shipping. -------- W.R. "Gig" Giacona 601XL Under Construction See my progress at www.peoamerica.net/N601WR Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=109184#109184

I bet they never let me in the back room of Zenith after that last email.. ;) All of the execs were at the show, and I was alone with the office staff picking up parts, so I didnt get any particulars about the plane other than what Mark just wrote about it... Spent just 2 days at Sun n Fun... drove down from Wisconsin and spent the rest of the time at the beach down there... but it was fun to walk around as usual... I noticed that Kitfox and Sonex vendors were absent.... my impression is that the vendor participation may be down... and I really MISS the full color MAP of the grounds they use to hand out, now replaced by a black and white newsprint version. And, the EAA had a flyer handout when registering that said in the past they use to have a small gift for members in their booth, but THIS year no gift as all of your money is going to the EAA instead to perform their mission... hmm.... What impressed me the most was how many small aircraft have those nifty glass panels in them now... and vendors have them all lit up on display... amazing how a few years can change things so fast. And I always stop by the big metal buildings to pick up new catalogs... got one from AC Spruce... and Wicks only had LAST years out there... so it was a little lighter carrying my 'XM satellite' bag around! Dont forget to get a free copy of Trade a Plane.... It was fun to watch the 701 take off from the UL strip.. Zenith did have another booth in the UL area! Weather was excellent. Very nice seeing everyone at the BBQ.. Easy to recognize metal plane builders by the scars and cuts in their fingers from pre-deburred aluminum edges.. You can almost tell from looking into someone's eyes whether they are still building OR are finished and flying..... those that havent started the build seem to have the same look as those that are finished and flying.... And thats the extent of my story and Im sticking to it...!

With both seats full the CG is a bit farther aft and it's a little bit easier to rotate and pitch authority increases some. Considering that adding a "standard sized" passenger will increase takeoff weight by about 15%, you should expect a significant difference in takeoff roll and climb rate. "is there a significant difference in takeoff and landing performance when you have have both seats occupied compared to flying solo?" Tim-- I do not see or feel any difference solo or loaded to gross, other than dropping faster in altitude as would be expected. I still have to pull the plane off the runway and as soon as the mains touch on landing the nose comes down. By the use of flaps and a little power you can slow the plane down such that when the nose gear does come down the impact is rather light. Of course this iswith the use of a Rotax. Tommy Looks Good! I am nearly ready to paint my 701 and interested in knowing more. Can you give details on what you used to prep and prime? Appreciate it Roger -----Original Message----- From: owner-zenith-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-zenith-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Tommy Walker Sent: Tuesday, April 24, 2007 5:46 PM Subject: Zenith-List: Painting... Listers, I am painting my 701 project. I'm using Acrylic Enamel. We thoroughly cleaned and prepped everything and then applied primer, tack coat, second coat, then a 50/50 enamel-thinner mist which left a very good finish as evidenced by the attached photo. Thanks to Larry Martin for his referral to this paint. I think I will like it very well. I was lucky to meet several of you at SNF and enjoyed my trip down this year. Do not archive The question that comes to mind if you have difficulty holding the nose off is: " What is the actual computed CG when landing?" Is it near the fwd limit? It must be. CG can be brought under control by moving the battery or adding ballast in the tail. When solo, I carried 50 lb. of sand bags in the baggage compartment of my Beech Musketeer. Gave it a real personality change. Somebody told me years ago that after you locate the ready for flight CG, drop a plum bob. Then swing it aft about ten (no more than fifteen) degrees and that's where the MLG axle should be. Go the other way for tailwheels. You really have to locate the CG in its "3D" position. It will be some distance up from the belly into the interior of the A/C. This is called a "wetted line" or "water line" (W/L on the drawings). Not practical to do without some approximation. A friend of mine who is a retired Marine used to instruct on T-34C's at the Navy Primary Flight school at nearby NAS Whiting Field. He described a technique that was used to land real short. It was likely not in the syllabus. When in the flare or even prior, apply full nose down trim. The tab goes up. It augments the full up elevator and gives you more authority and a shorter, slower landing. Control pressure is manageable at slow speed. I'm sure that it is not an approved NATOPS maneuver, but just something the manual writers never thought of. But then again, there are not supposed to be tire marks on the top of water tanks on the downwind leg of various Navy fields in the Pensacola area either. do not archive My CG is actually more reaward than I'd like, so I do not believe it is just a matter of CG location. I believe it is a function of the landing gear placement and angle of attack of the wing. Obviously YES, the plane with one body is 220 lbs (approx) lighter, big difference.Longer landing roll longer take off roll, that is why there is a weight limit. They typically have two sets of numbers when quoting performance, two person and one person. I am sure someone on this web will say the other wise, just think with common sense.two people are heavier than one, thus more mass to push around. Subject: Making rudder nose rib... am I stupid?
Hi all, watching the projects of the 701, the rudder nose and tip ribs are 60 open all around the tip to the first crimp location. right? I took a look to several photos about these two parts forming blocks and everybody made them sanded at 90. Also on the "Scratch building basics" DVD they did the same. Today i tried to make the rudder nose rib with this 60 angle on tip (in a very professional way! :) ) http://www.shortcutto701.com/rudder/IMG_2020.jpg Do you think it's a good thing or can it be omitted? Here some shots. A crimp location will be made in the middle of changing angle 60 / 90 and after i'm going to hang it shapely with sand paper. http://www.shortcutto701.com/rudder/IMG_2018.jpg http://www.shortcutto701.com/rudder/IMG_2030.jpg http://www.shortcutto701.com/rudder/IMG_2039.jpg I look forward for your opinions! Bill, It's not much of a "string" at this point; one reply does not a string make. In spite of that, yesterday I fabbed the mounting bracket for the ignition coils and today I installed them. I see on the front page that this forum is dedicated to all the Zenith planes including the CH620. Is anyone building this plane? Were plans ever available. That would be an interesting bird to build if it's available in plans. -------- Andy Shontz CH601XL - Corvair www.mykitlog.com/ashontz Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=109270#109270

Jay, I don't know what photos you have but FWIW I have lots of shots of these 601XL/Corvair installations: - William's 601XL tail dragger - Phil Maxson's 601XL I've got 54 photos totaling 64 MB. I can stick these on a CD and mail it to you if you want. Also I assume you've browsed Chris Steiner's and Bill Howerton's sites? http://homepage.mac.com/csteiner/PhotoAlbum8.html http://bill.howerton.com/zodiac/engine_page.htm Some folks apparently have early copies of William's long promised FWF manual but not me. -- Craig

Jay, Sorry I can't really add anything, but I guess I'm doing essentially as you are as far as figuring out the firewall layout (going by pictures etc.), as what I have so far installed and planned to install matches your drawings perfectly, with only exceptions being probably insignificant variations on the placement of those items on the cockpit side of firewall. Anyway, it's nice to know that at least someone else is thinking along the same lines, and I really appreciate your taking the time to make and show your drawings because if anyone finds fault with them I will probably have the same problem.
