I cannot go with the long ones. No panel space. I need the smaller profile, like
Becker sells but everything is over a grand. I didn't realize they were so expensive.
Can anyone help with the price......Thanks Geoff

Check out E-Bay. Add a e-mail alert for which ever models you are interested in.
There have been some very good deals on non Mode S Xponders out of Europe since
they have started requiring Mode S over there.

Gang:
I would like to thank everyone for their ideas on holding down the
carpet.
Lots of people like Velcro, but it requires sewing onto the carpet and
riveting onto the airframe.
I personally didn't like the idea of bedliner, as I definitely want the
compartment floor to *not* be sticky. With the shape of the
compartment, I expect to slide stuff in often.
Some have had good luck with carpet tape, but I *think* I want it to be
more easily removable.
I'm heading down to the auto finishing specialty store today, where I
know they have a large assortment of the various and sundry push-in
plastic fasteners used in cars. I'll see what I can find. So no
decision yet.

Larry,
You're wife would like the Clarity Aloft set as it sets over the ears
and has a set of ear plugs that protect and convey very well.
I've a set that my wife uses and she's very comfortable with them.
Extremely light!

Subject: | Re: Headset Question |
Hi Larry,
There is simple but expensive solution to the clamping pressure
of headsets: the Bose headset. The cost is almost $1000/headset,
but it is very light, does not clamp at all, and noise attenuation is
terrific. It actually is quieter than the cabin of commercial jets.
Some years ago I made that expensive decision and have not
regretted it ever. I would say that it has doubled the enjoyment
of flying. I often fly 7 or even 9 hours in one day, and the Bose
set is just as comfortable at the end of such a long day as it
was for the initial takeoff.
Mind you, there may be now other headsets that deliver similar
performance at lower cost. I do not know. What I do know is
that Bose's performance, warranty service, etc., is impeccable.
Happy flying,
Klaus

It is also possible to assemble your own in-the-ear headset. Have a look at
http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t 289 for ideas. I
have a pair partially completed now using Sony headphones (MDR-EX71, about
$35) and the matching Comply foam tips (the same ones that Clarity Aloft
uses). Once I can scrounge up an old headset for the microphone I'll be able
to finish it up.

OK that settles it. I'll pass on the Transponder. I'm not interested in IFR anyway.
As long as I have a radio I can enter D class without one and C class with
permission (and follow explicit ATC directions). I have no wish to enter A class
at all

It is more than just class C. It is the 30 nm radius mode C "veil". In my

If you fly outside the vail yet above 10K, transponder is required.

Hi Geoff,
You may not be considering what I think is the most important reason
for having a transponder. It is the ability of ATC to accurately
locate you in three dimensions and guide other traffic around
you. This can happen any time you are in radar coverage - not just
when you are in specific controlled airspace.
Of course you can stay out of controlled airport airspace, but if you
navigate around the control areas you are still in a position of
higher traffic density. Put another way, even when you are outside
the formal control area for a high density airport you still are at
risk for a mid-air collision. There may be a whole bunch of VFR
fliers skirting the control areas just like you are. If none of them
are talking to ATC then only see-and-avoid can work, but if one of
them (like me) is in contact with ATC then the radar and transponder
information can be used to help avoid accidents.
It has always been my standard practice to squawk mode A and C
whenever I am in the air. This little habit has the potential to
save your life.

I would not skip the transponder because I enjoy flight following on cross
countrys. Also if you are in an area like mine, the military aircraft have
a better chance in seeing you. It is worth the investment.=0ARob=0A=0A=0A--

But the FAA proposed sport pilot rule change may modify the "above 10,000
ft" limit to be "above 10,000 ft or 2000 ft agl". Given where I live if this
change goes through I will commonly be a sport pilot flying above 10,000 ft
msl.

Presumably "explicit ATC directions" would include an assigned altitude. So
assuming you don't ignore the instructions from ATC your assigned altitude
plus the radar bounce gives ATC your 3D location. Remember that any aircraft
that doesn't have an electrical system (glider, a Cub) isn't required to
have a transponder either. So ATC is already dealing with this situation.

Hi Geoff,
You may not be considering what I think is the most important reason
for having a transponder.
This little habit has the potential to
save your life.

you will need txpr for Class B and if you want guidance from ATC, they will ask
that you sqawk a code. Don't be cheap, just get one rebuilt if you have to.

And then in 2010 we all change out our mode C s to Mode S. That way ATC
will know your altitude, position AND your name, address, pilot ratings ,
medical info. They need it to send your citation to you directly.....

I used AUTO TRUNK carpet, not not truck box liner. That would be very heavy for

The trunk carpet I got from Pep Boys and or Checker Auto,it is extremely light.
The adhesive doesn't amount to a hill of beans for weight.

Subject: | Headset mic-boom fix |
Hi guys,
You know what it is to have the microphone rotate down from your mouth
on a hot day and it seems to continually slip off your lower lip? Ive
frustrated over this more of recent and today, without taping the
mic-boom to my face, I found a solution. The double wire that secures
the mouthpiece thru the rotating cap on the plastic ear-piece is held in
compression between a rotating two-piece plastic knob. The split-holes
the wires go thru are wider than the wire so I took a medium to heavy
paper clip, trimmed it to a piece one inch each side beyond the single
180-degree bend radius. The radius was opened so the legs were about
100-degrees and then using pliers, bent 3/8ths inch from the radius each
side to get the wire ends parallel. Then the radius segment was bent to
a 20-degree offset from the straight pieces. The two loose ends were
adjusted for width and forced in along the outside of each of the
microphone wires and pushed thru the shared holes. This provided enough
tension to secure rotation of the mouthpiece. Its still very
adjustable, but not droopy any more as it puts a reasonable drag between
the plastic knob and the plastic earpiece.
This is about near to nothing as a subject can get, and a less than
expensive headset, but this had gone on long enough.
Anyway, hang in there and keep building,

The important thing about safe flying is not taking the 40 hrs Private

There were a couple of times that the turbulence from the building storms caused
me to really blow the altitudes and as I was doing the steep turns, I actually
had to exit the turn and restart. I thought I had blown the check ride
and was a little discouraged. This particular examiner always announces
a new private pilot on down wind when they come in. Well, I was on the
ground and there was no announcement until I cleared the runway! I had
not even thought that I was performing an engine out landing as my final demonstration.
He told me that the decisions I had made to exit the maneuver
for safety, was the right decision. I could not have asked for a more horrible
day, but it worked out. Thank you for the encouragement. It
meant a lot to me for all of your input and now I can share my experience with
the 6 other students there. One thing that I found very interesting, was
the fact that there were
several things that the examiner did not like. This were things taught to
me by my instructor. I guess there can be some really big differences
between instructors.
We have storms building again today, so I am going to go out early tomorrow morning
and just enjoy flying for a change. I am going to go alone and just
relax and fly like I know I can.
Thanks again for all the excellent advise.

I have flown through rain many times in production airplanes and never had a problem
with the operation of the engine. I think that those spark plugs are so
hot that moisture just sizzles off before it can create a short circuit.

Hi Larry,
Rain shouldn't be a problem in and of itself. However, it does
present a couple of secondary issues.
First is the reduced viability. If your only method of avoiding
aluminum or granite clouds is by looking out the windshield then rain
can reduce this ability.
Second, if the temperature is right (wrong?) you face the possibility
of rapid build up of clear ice. This will prevent your plane from
flying due to the changed airfoil shape and rapidly increased
weight. The good news is if you change altitude soon enough the ice
will melt. However, if you are already at low altitude your options
are quickly reduced. Icing happens only near the freezing point of
water - give or take a few degrees, so if you stay well above that
air temperature you should not have a problem.
Third (and this is a stretch) is the possibility of carb ice. To get
rain it must be around 100 percent humidity and this means carb ice
will form if the outside air temperature is in the neighborhood of 70
degrees. I might be wrong about the actual temperature since it
depends on the temperature reduction in your
carburetor. Fortunately, you probably have carb heat to deal with
this. If it is raining and your engine starts running rough or slow
then adding carb heat is a great idea.
Lastly, rain is noisy. It can make you very nervous. It can also
get you silly comments from ATC like "multiple targets in your
vicinity". (I got that once from a very green Air Force tower controller.)
Have fun,
Paul

No Dave, we all are just and only waiting for a professional result

All this because MYSELF (like maybe 99% of us) know nothing about accident

I agree Paul 100%. I'm finding they are starting up another thread in order
to keep the "fires burning". If you did just a little research on who
started this one, you will find this "accident" happened a little over a year
ago. Why rehash it now again?????
I am finding ALL of these lists that post such information (which the except
of the group that decided to take their discussions to a new forum - thank
you by the way!!) to be a LOT overwhelming. Why should I build or finish
an aircraft that is going to crash??? Common sense tells me I need to
call a junk dealer to reclaim all my "scrap metal" I've developed and NEVER let
anyone fly this death trap!!
See what a lot of listers don't get is, people actually DO take everything they
read to heart! In fact I know of 3 people that have literally sold or abandoned
their airplane because of what they are reading on these lists.
I for one am damned tired of reading about all the gloom and doom. If these
people insist on doing what they love to do (causing problems) I will be
very shortly behind those that have decided to delete their names from all the
lists. I do agree there IS a lot of good on these lists. I will have
to weigh out how much of the bad can I take before I can't take it any longer.
I WOULD suggest to Matt Dralle, that we need a forum of BONAFIDE builders that
actually have VALID PLANS in hand. They should be REQUIRED to prove they
do in fact own those serialized plans before they are allowed to join the group.
That would ensure only actual builders and plan holders have a legitimate
reason to be on here. Matt could get a list of serial numbers and
names of owners from Zenith. Mine is 7128 for a CH601XL. Anyone that
can't prove it, sorry - you can't belong to the list. This would totally
eliminate any trouble makers from posting irrational rants on here.
Sounds like a good idea to me.
Other comments and suggestions are of course always welcome!

Everything about the electrical seems to have been covered. I don't think light

Heavy rain would be like driving through the river.
I would shy away from rain if you have a wood prop. I hear it's not good for them,

to have to use some carb heat just getting to the departure end of the

Subject: | Importing a 601 from Canada to the U.S. |
Hello,
I currently own a 601HD. It is registered as an advanced ultralight in
Canada. Does anyone know if I can import this airplane into the U.S. I
am moving to the U.S. and want to take my plane but may be forced to
sell if it cannot be imported.
Thanks

Subject: | spark plugs and rain |
Hi Larry
I have been through several light-moderate rain showers without a problem w
ith the engine. A little anecdote here (please do not laugh to hard) The fi
rst time it happened (light shower) I was still pretty new to flying and I
started dropping altitude figuring I would avoid any clouds. My friend who
is an 80 year old pilot started chuckling and asked me where I was going. H
e said the rain goes all the way to the ground, just thank God for the free
wash job. I do remember that the rain on the canopy was real loud.
Regards
John
