I installed a sealed battery in my 701. I also installed the battery
box but it has no drain and the DAR was ok with that when I told him it
was a sealed battery. I did put the cover on the box just to protect
      the battery leads from foreigners.

These are the same as motorcycle/ATV tubes. Check the tube to make sure that the
small nut and rubber washer are tightened down to the base of the valve stem
against the tube itself--these go inside the wheel. The other nut goes on the
outside of the rim to prevent the stem from pulling inside the rim during installation.

      hope this helps

Dave and Fellow 601 Builders & Flyers, I've sent and posted the Aileron
Control Rod conversion saga about half a dozen places so far, but I don't really

know where it'll end up for viewing and down load. Hopefully somebody who
knows just the right localtion to place it for easy viewing will grab it up.
When you see it and if your not too pissed off at me and you have any questions

write me and I'll be happy to help. Best regards, Bill of Georgia

I know of two vendors of optical fuel presence sensors. They won't
monitor the level throughout the tank, just tell you when it passes a
point. The first (Pillar Point Avionics) appears to have gone out of
business as of the end of 2008. That leaves Aircraft Extras:

        http://www.aircraftextras.com/

They appear to only sell a complete system for detecting *low* fuel
levels. But there is no reason why the sensors couldn't be used to
detect a high level. See if they will sell just the sensor.

Thanks much for your input. Unfortunately, I don't have room left
in my panel to accommodate a sight gage. I can barely start nuts using
14" pliers considering everything I have to work around.

So, here's my plan B question. What sender would you put in? I'm
not worried about the wing tanks, just being able to monitor the header
during wing tank fuel transfers. A sender with a "Full tank" alarm would
      be the most useful.

Jay and I were talking about this at monday night chat and I have yet to do this
assembly myself. I still don't understand where the nuts go and what gets clamped.
There are threads on the stem near the cap and near the tube seperated
by a smaller diamter smooth part of the stem. There isn't enough thread on
the part near the tube for both nuts on my inner tubes or Jay's. It doesn't
look like there are enough on the picture that you posted. Does the one nut stay

The outside nut (closest to the valve stem cap) just tightens down to the outside
of the rim; I'm not sure if there is a recommended torque for this. The other
nut just gets tightened to the base of the tube. To be honest I'm not sure
if that base nut is necessary for this type of application but I'll leave that
up to you. The attached photo shows it being installed without the base nut
      and rubber washer.

Bill, you should SERIOUSLY consider submitting your article to either the new "Experimenter"
e-magazine from the EAA or "Sport Aviation". We really need more
articles from people showing their innovative solutions and modifications to
their homebuilt aircraft. I'm sure your article can be valuable to others, beyond

I'm curious as to why you used 049 wall and not the same as van's uses? I
saw where you took material off the tube end? Do you know what thickness that

ended up? I would think a thinner tube and not taking any material off the tube

end would not weaken the end that you are exerting force to would be better.
I am going to do this mod on the 601 I'm building and already have some tube
ends left over from a rv3 I built.

Jeff, I would have preferred to use the exact size tube I used in the
building of my RV-8a, but there was some logistical problems. The RV-8 uses a
      1 1/8
tube at with .35 walls making the threaded insert plug too thick without
machining for the thicker wall tube I purchased at Spruce. Also I needed about

94 inches of tube and finding T6 that long this side of the Mississippi was
difficult and Van's did not sell it that long so I compromised and used tube
with .014 thicker walls meaning I had to remove that much material from the
threaded plugs I purchased from Van's. Also as the rods for the XL are almost

20 inches longer than the RV
rods and aileron forces are greater with the XL's unbalanced aileron the
thicker walled rod is desirable. I'm not an engineer so I am unable to refine

the necessary difference so like most men I over build. Hope this answers your

      query and best regards, Bill
