We have a brand new chat room for the Zenith group ready for use. Please
click on the link below to be on your way there.

While at the web site, please take a look at the new stuff for Experimental
Aircraft Builders that I am in the process of making.
You can also look at it from the "Chat" page. Click on the link at the
bottom of the page to "Pop" it up.
May be something there that you will be able to use in your build. The
newest additions are CNC cut Insturment Bezels, Adaptors, and Cover Plates.

Coming soon, Tie Down Rings for the Ch-701 and a real neat Inspection
Opening Kit that will be ideal for the bottom of the CH-701 wings, along
      with other aircraft.

The solid rivets for the spar are 5/32. I'm looking for the correct rivet s
queezer tip to drive these 5/32 rivets into the spar. I see 3 sizes in ACS,
1/8,- 5/32, 3/16 all cupped. Which one is the correct one?

I'm tempted to order the 5/32 squeezer tip but don't know if this is the di
ameter of the tip's dome or the equivalent for 5/32 rivet.

      William,
The 5/32 is the correct one. They are specified by rivet size, not dome size.

The only thing I've purchased from Zenith has been the plans. In my opinion
the thing that consumes the most time building from scratch is sourcing materials.
I've purchased a number things only to find out that they would not work
and then had to find the right thing.
I would disagree with the post that said you'll have to buy a ton of fancy tools.
I've done almost everything with simple to make wooden jigs and fixtures and
tools most home handyman would likely have. I did purchase an oxy-acetylene
torch. I even made a bending brake out of wood.
I'm working on wing assembly now and then the only things left are to make a cowl,
      and then paint.

So far, I've made almost all of the parts myself. Still I have ordered a fe
w things from ZAC, they are:

      - All rivets, except for the fuel tank rivets. (I riveted and pros-sealed m
y tanks using self plugging rivets).
      - Fuel tank sender and fuel level gauge. (I shopped around and found that Z
enith have a very competitive price for them)
      - Flap nylon control plate.
      - Center spar upright angular. (didn't find them at ACS)
      - Center spar bolts.

I will buy the landing gear kit if it comes with all the parts like axles,
      rims etc.

Will I do it again? definitely yes, I enjoy the process of making my own pa
      rts.

As other have said, the primary motivation for scratch building should be f
or the enjoyment of it. There is money to be saved but it is at the expense
of time, if you won't enjoy it, don't do it, get the kit. You can expect t
o save somewhere between 6 to 10 grands over the total cost of the project.
If you are going for a 22k engine and FWF, 10K avionics, leather seats and
other luxuries, saving 6 to 10 grands might not be much percentage wise.

I disagree about the need for expensive tools, you are not going to spend t
he saving difference in tools, that's a myth.

A bending brake is a most for a scratch builder, it is the single tool that
will save you the most time if you have a good one. It is not difficult to
make but most DIY brakes clamps the material with screws or C clamps along
side of the bed. Commercial brakes clamps the material by lowering a lever
in each side. This make a huge time saving difference because there are lot
s of bending to do and the time you spend tightening C clamps or screws rea
lly add up. It is not difficult to adapt this type of mechanism to a DIY br
ake if you are a little creative. Larry McFarland's brake is the only DIY b
rake that I know with side levers for clamping. But you'll need access to a
machine shop to make some of its parts. There is also Dave Clay's brake, i
t is easy to make with no need for machining.

Very interesting. Are you flying? Cutting down the stick a bit would
reduce the leverage and help smooth out some of the pitch sensitivity I keep
      hearing about.
If you are flying, do you have any flying builders out your way equipped
with the Y stick? I'd be interested to hear an appraisal of the "Feel"
      characteristics of both setups.

      Hi Bill,
I find the Y-stick really helpful for getting in and out of the plane.
In flight the stick allows my GPS to be mounted on the vertical portion
below and extend above and between the handles. This is helpful to
change GPS settings or even batteries while still being able to fly the
plane. I like the Y-stick and think it feels very natural from either
      seat. See link,

Bill, I have the Y stick in my 701, and I have the shortened stick in my
      601. Two different planes - but I see no difference. The shortened stick
allows me to relax my forearm on the center divider. I have seen that
others have had to add cushions to the center divider for flying with
the Y stick. As far as vertical sensitivity, I feel that the the
wandering comes from the plane and air currents rather than lack of
response in the stick,,,,,,,Fred N9601 do not archive
