Hi Guys My 701 engine speed will increase if I don't hold a firm grip on the throttle..It does not stay where it is set. Is there a solution.. I thought of taking out the springs on each carburetor which opens the throttle to release the pull back tension any suggestions would be appreciated. On the CanZac floats..I did not receive a reply from Mark Townsend on My floats ordered on Feburary 7th and promised for May 15th.. I will cancel this order as I don't think there is a chance of getting floats from CanZac ..If you need a set of floats I suggest you look elsewhere for them..My whole summer float flying season was not available because of it. Zenith Aircraft said they have been aware of this problem with Canzac for more then a year..They are looking at a float kit you can build yourself. and other options too Alvin Rose Marystown, NL CH-701

Alvin Do not remove or change the carburettor throttle springs. They guarantee power if something fails. You can easily increase friction on the transverse throttle bar or replace the pilot side throttle to one having adjustable friction. rgrds Max ________________________________ From: owner-zenith701801-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-zenith701801-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of ext Alvin Rose Sent: Monday, 22 September, 2008 15:39 To: zenith701801-list@matronics.com Subject: Zenith701801-List: throttle changes setting and canzac floats Hi Guys My 701 engine speed will increase if I don't hold a firm grip on the throttle..It does not stay where it is set. Subject: Re: Rotax throttle springs
Alvin, It is not advisable to replace the throttle springs on the 912. Although these springs may 'seem' a bit too much, they were spec'd that way in order to guarantee opening of the throttle. Be default, the 912 is 'wide-open'throttle'.....it is the throttle linkage you install that maintains some setting less than wide open. This arrangement may appear 'backwards' of conventional thinking, but it is simply the method Rotax chose to use. On at least on 701 I am aware of, these were replaced with 'weaker' versions. Works real good until you suddenly need to make a go-around and find that you are faced with throttles that open very slowly ( or not at all ) as you manage NOT to clear some obstacle. It is possible that you may even see a 'first hand account' of this problem on the List. Best regards, Zed

=?iso-8859-1?Q?e_changes_setting_and_canzac_floats? Yes, do not remove them! I bought a Kitfox that had the springs removed and the cables replaced with solid cables so that the throttle was "pushed" open with the throttle cable. At the time I wasn't aware of the PROPER method of hooking things up. Ignornce was bliss! Worked great till one of the solid cables broke shortly after takeoff, leaving me with half an engine! Not a smooth 'half' engine, either, the engine coughing and surging and bucking, although still producing some power. It would have got me home if I had the altitude, but I couldn't climb with it! I had little runway left but chopped the power and I swear slipped the plane sideways all the way to the ground (never have slipped any aircraft so much, before or since) and kicked it straight at the last second, pulling back on the stick and putting on the brakes as hard as I dared without nosing over! There was a line of tree stumps along the far end of the runway and I stopped with the prop less that 6 inches from a huge tree stump. So I wouldn't advise changing the springs to a different method. Those springs ar a great safety mechanism, as I almost found out the hard way! On my 701 I replaced the T handle on the left throttle with a regular adjustable throttle knob. Otherwise adjust the friction bar on the firewall. But don't mess with the springs! Ouch! ----- Original Message ----- From: Jean-Paul Roy To: zenith701801-list@matronics.com Sent: Monday, September 22, 2008 8:28 AM Subject: Zenith701801-List: R=E9p. : Zenith701801-List: throttle changes setting and canzac floats Alvin, by all means DO NOT REMOVE THESE SPRINGS,,,,,,,,,, you may want to contact Jon Croke from Homebuilthelp.com and have him tell you what has happenned doing this. Hi Alvin, I had the same gripe with my Subaru powered 601hds and removed the springs and went to a throttle-cable arrangement that has a sheath guided 1/16th diameter music wire. It's push pull now and works like any Cessna or Piper and I like it much better. Also, I got rid of the dual cables as well and went with a flexible interconnect to tie the two throttle arms, so only one cable from the firewall forward is needed. The throttles stay exactly at the same relative positions open thru closed. 5 or more pictures on my sites engine page describe the arrangement which is only similar to the Rotax. See link, www.macsmachine.com/html/subaruengine.htm Larry McFarland 601HDS at www.macsmachine.com Alvin Rose wrote: > Hi Guys > > My 701 engine speed will increase if I don't hold a firm grip > on the throttle..It does not stay where it is set. Great find on that info Mark. Kind of confirms my thought about that interconnecting vent tube needing to always be above the tank. I don't quite get how the fuel is coming from the fullest tank though. If the fuel was coming from the fullest tank then why wouldn't the level in that tank go down? Is the posting saying that the fuel is siphoning across the interconnecting vent tube? I also don't see how putting a vent tube on both tanks would help either. Wouldn't that be more likely to allow a differential pressure between tanks? Curt -----Original Message----- From: owner-zenith701801-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-zenith701801-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of SafeAirOne Sent: Sunday, September 21, 2008 8:30 PM Subject: Zenith701801-List: Re: fuel flow for CH701 <safeairone@verizon.net> Great study of the issue, Bob! I was curious about this problem and its solution in production aircraft. A web search revealed the same complaint from everything from Yaks to Cessnas. Of course, the Yaks are low-winged, but the discussion in their forum eventually turned to the problem in Cessnas. See: http://www.aviatorair.com/Site/Aviator_Forum.html >From what I gather, unless you can get a common vent line completely above the fuel level, (and we can't do this with any degree of elegance in the 701/801) you can only minimize the issue, as Cessna has, and not eliminate it. Interesting to note that the full tank is the one feeding the engine and siphoning the fuel out of the emptier tank to fill the vacuum created in the feeding tank. -Mark do not archive

    Subject: 701 Hard Landing
Damien, You need to know how it hard-landed. If the the nose gear sheared you need to be concerned about engine damage from a prop strike. I would look at everything, but more carefully at the longerons (any bending is a no-no), horizontal stab supports (they could have cracks), and structure around the gear for bends or cracks. Also look at the wing attachment points on the fus. If the noise gear was ok, probably so is the engine and mount. 701's are very strong but its a good idea to check everything carefully. It is a nice looking plane but 2 years ago it had a real hard landing. The landing gear had to be replaced. What and where should I be looking for to make sure that the structure has not been damaged ? I think that the plane has gone through 2 or 3 annuals since then, so I am hoping that is a good sign. Thanks.

Here is a Cessna Tech Note on "Uneven Fuel Feeding in Single Engine Cessna's": http://www.moonflight.org/Documents/Fflow.pdf There is a lot of good stuff there. It has more detailed information about most of this and explains how fuel is siphoned from the less full tank to the fuller tank via the interconnecting vent line. It has the whys and when's the fuel system was changed. Also some simple tests I had not considered. It answered my question about why one fuel cap is vented and the other is not. BTW, it is not always vented but only vents as a backup after the vacuum has built up after a primary vent failure. I always noticed that the vent tube is located behind the strut. I thought it might be there to reduce the chance of a bug plugging it in flight. Turns out it is to reduce the chances of freezing. The vent tube location and the strut fairing location (condition) are critical. When I started this thread a few weeks ago, my primary concern was not "unequal fuel flow". I think that can be explained by unequal tank pressure or level due to various causes. My big concern is how "one tank completely drains before the other tank starts to flow". The only explanation I've seen for that so far is that an air bubble gets trapped in the line from one tank. Curt

My take on the bulkhead hole is that you could probably do it, possibly hinging a door, but why not put some reinforcement in the bulkhead first? I put a BRS chute on this bulkhead. I needed to strengthen it first and could show you how I did it. Write directly to me if you want a picture of what I did. Thanks guys for the advice regarding sending pics through matronics. I have attached two pictures taken during the construction of N67MG that show the reinforcement to the baggage compartment back wall used to support my BRS chute. The reinforcement consists of some big gussets with Ls on their sides, and horizontal Ls top and bottom. The heavy vertical Ls close to the center hold the chute. Also, see the full-height cargo door on the pilot side of the compartment in the pictures. I can get my 20# folding bike through this door and have cargo nets forward of the door so nothing heavy falls to the back. Subject: Re: fuel flow for CH701
    From: "SafeAirOne" <safeairone@verizon.net>
Bob Kissell, the originator of this thread, accidentally sent this to just me instead of the whole list, so I'll cut-and-post it here for everyone to read. Kudos to Bob for taking the experiment to the next step to answer the question we probably all have regarding a completely full tank and a completely dry tank. >From Bob: Thanks for the reviews since I posted my "study". Since then I have flown a cross-country with snorkel vents installed. The flight took 1.25 hours and I started with nearly full tanks. I cruised at 80 mph IAS and when I arrived at my destination the fuel gauges were at nearly identical positions. A major improvement from the original Zenith caps. On the return trip I filled one tank to the brim and the other to a lesser amount but nearly full. When I arrived after a 1.5 hour cruise (head wind this time) I measured the fuel depth of both tanks and had about a 1/3 inch delta. SInce I started with an imbalanced fuel the higher tank must have siphoned (flowed) to the lower tank. I am very happy with these results. For you guys wishing to have snorkel vents it is easy to modify the Zenith caps. I purchased some steel brake line stock with fittings and flares on both ends. I drilled the center of each cap with a hole to match the diameter of the line. The brake line was cut and the threaded fitting removed and then bent with a tubing bender to create the right angle, two were made. The tube was then inserted into the hole and aligned so that the flared end faced forward after the cap is locked into position on the tank. Important..the cap position from tank to tank varies so you must trial fit these vents. Once the vent position is determined I brazed the tube to the cap with a MAP gas torch and brass brazing rods. The gasket was not damaged by the heat, but don't push it. The caps were then cleaned and painted. Total cost was about 5$ for the brake line material, if you have the rest of the tools. Also don't forget to fill the original vents along the cap edge, I used epoxy. I plan to do an empty tank test soon and will report the results. I will drain one tank and clamp the fuel line so no fuel can flow into the empty one from the tank with fuel and no air can possibly enter the system if drawn by the engine. I will take off on one tank with half fuel and once over a very large empty field at high altitude remove the clamp. This will duplicate the case of one tank running dry with plenty of fuel in the other. Then orbit around for 30 minutes or so and see what happens. If the engine falters then I will replace the clamp, turn on boost and restart or land in the big field and then restart. I am fairly certain though that the engine will continue to run and I will land will fuel in the empty tank. Wish me luck though...
