Interesting that some Cessna models have the warning, some don't, even in the same airframe.

Among the Cessna products which do not have the slip caution are:
* 1968 T-41C, this is a 172 with a 210hp IO-360 & fixed pitch prop
* late 70s R-172K, same with constant speed prop & 195 hp
* 78 C-182Q, 230hp

All of these have 40 degree flap capability.

Remember that Cessna just offers a caution, not a prohibition on slipping with full flaps.

Two words... Spam Cans!
Cessna advises in their POH not to do slips with full flaps as air coming
off the wings is unsettled passing over the tail of the plane.

An interesting technique I learned in training for my private years ago in a 69 Cessna 150 with 40 degrees of flaps. I was being shown how to spiral down through a hole in the clouds. My instructor had me slow to the bottom of the white arc, then pull the 40 degrees of flaps and hold the airspeed at the bottom of the white arc. As the nose kept coming down to hold that speed he had me open my door while he opened his door holding them open with one foot, and to maintain the bottom of the white arc with pitch. We were stable, decending at the bottom of the white, and all I could see out the windscreen was earth. Seemed like a good alternative to lots of spiraling where you could get too slow and spin if you weren't careful. Anyone else ever do this?

Yeah, but it's really uncomfortable holding the doors open with your
feet in a Kitfox. Wink

Easy. Just slow down. If cross controlled you'll initiate a spin every time.

Nope. Ain't so. I argued with Clint about this a while back. And Lost!

There are two different uncoordinated conditions. In one case the nose of
the craft is blocking air to the low wing. This will introduce you to a
spin very quickly as soon as you get slow.....

The other case is a purposeful slip. In this case the nose of the craft is
blocking the HIGH wing. If you lose lift on the high wing due to getting
too slow, you will level the wing....

Clint can explain it better than I can, but that is the essence of the
explanation.

Randy

I would bet alot of dead guys up here that get into a "moose hunter" stall and spin in would disagree.

Just take it up, put it into a slip, and keep hauling the stick back (at altitude of course). First time I did an un-coordinated stall in a 172 it taught me a lesson on how fast you find yourself upside down and spinning in. Did it in the 12 and in my avid too just to see what would happen. It can indeed tuck a wing and snap on you.
