I am deciding on which aircraft I want to build. The mission profile is well defined as long-haul cross country for my wife and me in a comparatively fast plane. The F.8L fits the profile. Are there builders local to the Fort Worth area (Granbury, Hicks, etc., also) that can tell me the number of hours or years it took to build their planes? Thanks.

Hi. I’m a UK based Falco builder; and have used all of the Falco Kits to build my aircraft (ribs, spar, electrics, hinges, metal parts etc.)
Even with this system, the task is still bigger than nearly all “kit” aircraft.
I have been building for 14 years – the total number of hours not always the practical measure of effort involved! Look at www.seqair.com . Most builders have the same experience as me; the combination of time available vs. all the other forces on us – family, houses to extend, when money is available at same time as time on our hands!

Therefore the 9,000 hours mentioned by Sequoia is a guide only.

I think the record is a two person team rebuilding an aircraft the pilot crashed in 18 months – and that’s a person who knew how to do it all.

The Falco is magnificent – but you have to enjoy the build as much, if not more, than the objective of flying it!

Good luck.

Angus Buchanan

Hi, Angus. Thank you for your instructive comments. The decision with which I must come to grips is whether I would have the “stamina” to build such a magnificent aircraft. At first blush, I’m a flyer and not a builder but I may be willing to trade the two for a time in order to have a Falco.

[quote] Pete,

I am in the building process of a Falco, plans building. It has been a long process. I now have 10+ years of part time work into it, and should be, hopefully, done in another year or so. It has been an interesting project with a tremendous amount of learning. You must have a lot of patience, and enjoy the project for what it is.

The Falco is a wonderful aircraft. It is fast and responsive, a real joy to fly.

As I said in the first paragraph, it is labor intensive especially if you plans build it. Sequoia has a lot of kits of preassembled parts, but it gets very expensive to go this route.

The RV7 is a good airplane to build, much shorter time than the Falco, and it is a good flying fast cross country craft, which is much less expensive and labor intensive, than the Falco kit process.

One of the best forums for the Falco is http://falco.co.nz/phpBB3/index.php This is the South Pacific Falco Forum. Lots of good builders and lots of help. Give a try.

Good luck on your building endevors.
