The airport where I have my airplane doesn't keep the taxiways free of small rocks an debris as well as I would like. If I taxi with under 1,100RPM's I find I have to use the brakes a lot more than I want to. In order not to use the brakes for taxi, I need to bring the RPM's up to over 1,100RPM's but this picks up a lot of rocks and debris causing the propeller to be nicked a lot. Since I had good results with VG's on the horizontal stabilizer I decided to try them on the Vertical stabilizer and see if I could taxi without brakes with under 1,100RPM's.

After I installed them I can taxi, no brakes, with just around 1,000RPM's which is better than I did before. Here are pictures of the installation:

Running a tape line 4" in front of the hinges.                   Installing the VG's along the tape line with 30mm spacing.

What the VG's look like after installation.
The first 3 of VG's were the most difficult to install, after that it was easy. The hardest part was making sure the lines on each side of the stabilizer were even with each other so they looked good. Now the airplane has "Shark Teeth" in the tail. Surprised)

---------------------------------------------------------------
I also found the great way to keep from loosing small parts while I work on the airplane. When I visited my Daughter, she has a newborn, I noticed she uses a plastic container for the baby diaper wipes.

I took an empty one to the hangar and it works great.

With the top part open you can put small parts into the container and they wont fly all over the place when you eventually knock it over.

The parts are easy to get to when you need them too.

Hi Galin,

What were you looking to acomplished with the VGs?  Did they significantly reduced the stall speed?

Pete;

The VG's are on the vertical stabilizer so no effect on stall speed. I just wanted to taxi the airplane with less than 1,000RPM's and without using the brakes. That way I don't nick the propeller with loose debris picked up at higher RPM's.

The original VG's, on the horizontal stabilizer, were to give me better/more control during the flare on landing. They did make a difference in that I can now hold the nose up a little longer even after touchdown. I can now make smooth landing where the tires just "squeak" more often since the installation. I have not installed VG's on the wing.

Galin,

Makes sense.  So you did get significant improvement on the landings with the VGs on the horizontal stabilizer, did you also extended the HS?  I have a Lycoming O320 which is a bit heavier and does not allow me to hold the nose up long.

I got a noticeable improvement on my flare. I have the 4 seat KIS-4 with a Lycoming O-360 so the nose came down quite sharply after the mains had touch down. With the VG's I can hold it off longer and bring the nose down a bit softer. I am pleased with the resulting change.
