|
|
Hi Gary,
I am not sure I am instlling the rear baffles 550400-6 and 550400-3 where they join under the hinge. The original right baffle had a step in it and they both were joined and bolted to the bracket that is attached to the two top bolts of the accessory case.(part 5502012-11).
Q 1: The Jaguar Cowl install manual doesn't mention it, but I imagine the the rear baffles are still attached to this bracked, arent' they?
Jaguar rear baffles don't have a step so when I try to connect them and attach them to the bracket, I need to bend them, the right one more than the left one. If I do so, they are slanted at an angle in the relationship to the accessory case flange and the right one is bent back, which is probably not good for smooth air flow.
Another option would be to make another bracket that would serve as a step, similar to the step in original baffle.
Q 2: How have you been installing those baffles, slanted or with another bracket or some other way?
Q 3: How much space should there be between the baffles and the hinge horizontally and vertically - 1/2 inch, like everywhere else? Mine have no space right now and I just want to make sure before cutting.
Q 4: On the pictures in the manual it looks like your baffles are painted. I am guessing you had mine etched and alodined before you sent them, right? Can I leave them as is or do they have to be painted? What kind of paint? From a can from auto parts store?
Thank you,
-Boris

Hi Boris,
Q1: Yes, they don't line up exactly. I don't have a good pic on the mock-up of the baffles to share, but, they only miss by a little. The baffle seals go on the back side. The baffles will fit against the bracket already on the engine. I'll get a better pic.
Q2: see Q1.
Q3: There should be about 1/2 inch gap on all the baffles. The left rear inner baffle changes were not yet approved so you go the original 'trim-to-fit' baffle for both the inner and outer left rear.
Q4: The preparation on the baffles is an etch an alodine. It adds to the cost, yes, but, it makes a lot better looking and longer lasting part. You can leave it as is or have it powder coated. It will cost about $100 to have them powder coated. If you paint it, it will still scratch easily and not last as long as powder coating.
Just a note: when installing the baffles, after powder coating and baffle seals, put a thin coat of RTV 732 on the mating surface. Remember, the short baffle (on the cylinders) always goes on top of the longer baffle.
