Hi,

My name is Barry and I joined the KIS list to learn more about the super cruiser because I'm thinking about buying a kit that's 70 percent done from one of the current builders. I currently own a Pulsar III that I finished building about 6 years ago and really enjoy flying but my wife is starting to have problems getting in and out of it and it is a bit on the small side.

I have a couple of questions that maybe a few of you could answer for me.

How tall of a pilot can fit comfortably in these planes (I'm 6' 2" plus)?

What are the actual performance and flight characteristics like. What are actual empty weights and useful loads comming out to?

Does anyone have experience with the LYCOMING XP360 engine by Mattituck with the fadec system?

Is anyone willing to talk to me on the phone and share their experience with flying one?

Thanks for any info you might provide.

Barry

I'm 6' and there's little head room to spare in my plane but it's probably because I'm using adjustable seats from a Mazda Miata,
which are thicker than the what the kit calls for.

Mine is about 85% done on the body parts and has no engine or avionics, so I never flew it.

No, but I don't see why it wouldn't be a dependable Lyc.

I'm actually looking to sell and was planning to continue and finish it except for the firewall forward.  I live in FL and a close airport is Venice Municipal.  Be happy to show and tell if you can make it down here. Also,  I can send you jpegs if you wish.

Barry,

For various reasons related to LIFE, I am still in the process of building my KIS Cruiser. The project is currently on an extended hold yet again but I will try to give some answers to your questions.

The capability of the KIS Cruiser to accomodate a tall pilot is entirely a factor of how the builder installs the pilot seating and the installation of the rudder pedals along with some variation in the instrument panel.  Several builders have used the fixed seating and varied the cushions and/or the rudder pedal placement to accomodate height adjustment. Others have gone with various forms of adjustable seats that can slide on rails and offer some degree of adjustment of back position which is what I am doing. I know of one builder who was several inches taller than you who built and flew his KIS Cruiser for several years. I can't speak to your instance specifically since I am height challanged at 5'8'' and my wife is barely 5'1''. In my case, I needed seats that offered adjustment both upward and downward as well as forward and back. I adapted some seats from a small car by stripping to the frame and rebuilding the seats with temperfoam. Gives 3-4 inches of forward to back adjustment with seat backs that fully recline.

Flight characteristics and actual performance varies depending on engine, prop, and finished weight but the numbers don't seem to be far off from the published values. I will ask some of the currently flying pilots to chime in on these but you can find some of the details on my website.   http://www.kisbuild.onfinal18.com/

The engine you mention is probably the Mattituck Superiof IOF-360 engine and while I don't have specific numbers on that engine, it is the same one I am planning on using and has a successful record in RV-6's and RV-9s. It is not a Lycoming if it is the XP360 but a very good engine that I think you will be pleased with. The FADEC system has proven to be very good in those who are flying but support has not been the best since Continental bought the company.  There is a good support group for the FADEC at Aerosance_Fadec(at)yahoogroups.com (Aerosance_Fadec(at)yahoogroups.com). They have participants who are currently flying the FADEC on the Superior XP360 engine as well as one guy from Mattituck.

As for who to talk to about flying....Galin Hernandez and Bob Andersen would be my recommendations. There are several others currently flying but Galin has been flying the wings off his plane in just about every condition from severe clear to vfr icing (not recommended). Bob has likewise been doing a lot of varied flying with his plane. Both are shown on my website. My only experience with flying the KIS is also documented on my website. I would be happy to talk with you if it would help.

Bob Reed

PS: I still believe it is one of the best 4-place aircraft around if you are not looking for a bus. It combines economy of the IO-360 engine size with the load capacity of a Cessna-172 with a lot more speed. It will carry two adult men and two adult women is relative comfort but isn't intended for 4 large men although I have been on board with 4 full sized adults. My goal was a plane that would accomodate my wife and myself along with all the luggage she could carry or my daughter and some luggage. For that it would be perfect.

Minimum speed is quite a bit greater than listed.
I think it is due to the Pitot tube mounted below the wing in the prototype and most of the other later made planes. This position of Pitot tube usually gives large speed errors.
I used a straight Pitot tube mounted 1.5 ft in front of the wing. I found minimum speed greater by at least 10m/h (depending on the load) in respect to the published data. A part of this difference might be due to my heavier engine (Franklin 220HP)

Hello,
It would help to know where you are located.
The 4 seat KIS is the best 4 seat kits out there in my opinion. It is really a shame the business
did not work out. The builder manual is very poor compared with what you get for an RV-10.
I am 6'2" and i was fine in the two cruisers I have been in.
If the fuselage top has not been bonded on then you can still add headroom
like i did on my 2 seat KIS. The factory cruiser was at least 200 pounds lighter than the current
factory RV-10 if they have the same engine.
I would personally concider installing an IO-540 in the cruiser.
I have a parallel valve 360 with ported heads, 10:1 pistons, and mechanical fuel injection
in my 2 seat kis. 220 HP, although i do not normally run it over 180 and never worry about hot/high.
I would much rather have my engine than the 180 HP fadec engine.
I don't think you can get anything but a stock engine with the fadec.
I would love to have a cruiser with a 540 built like my 360.
Still, put off buying an engine and avionics until you really, really need it. i have met a lot of people with 10 year old $25k
engine sitting in the corner or expensive avionics that are outdated by the time the airplane flies.
Cheers,
Scott

Thanks for all the great information so far. One of the reasons I enjoyed building my first airplane was all the great people I met on the forum and how helpful they were during the process. Sounds like this group is the same way.

Sounds like the Super Cruiser is a great airplane to own and fly.

BTW, I'm located near Columbia, South Carolina if anyone has one not to far from here.

Barry

Cheers,
Scott

Barry

Barry,

Like I said, I'm in Venice, FL.  About an 1 1/2 hour flight with your Pulsar.
