Wow! I'm glad I downgraded to Jeeps. I can only guess how expensive all that av gear must have cost. Then again, both are very sweet panels. Gary, want to help me design a new panel for my 1972 CJ-5?

Unfortunately, no, not this one. 1972 was the first year Jeep extended the front clip to really accomodate a bigger engine. Mine currently has an AMC 304 that I want to rebuild. After talking with several people, including a very reputable AMC machinist, everyone is pushing me toward doing a chevy 350 conversion. Still not sure which way to go. The AMC is a very cool engine, but parts are difficult to come by and are usually substantially more expensive than Chevy or Ford stuff. Sounds kind of like airplane stuff, huh? Beech vs. Cessna vs. Grumman?
If I don't keep the engine a stocker then I'm definitely not keeping the half assembled but legal and mostly working panel. I want a real panel in this thing. Just gotta figure out what to put it in. Speedo, Tach, Water, Oil Temp, Oil Pressure, Volts, various switches, including a manual over-ride for the electric fan, etc. Maybe an altimeter and a DG and compass too. Still learning about it as I go.

I'm no expert, but it seems to me that putting a DG in an off-road vehicle is asking for trouble. At least if it's a standard mechanical gyro sort of DG. As all aircraft owners know, those things are expensive, to begin with. Next, it would probably precess pretty badly, from the start, with all the accelerations (starts, stops, turns, bumps) going on. On top of all that, I'd bet that all the bouncing around would also wear out the bearings in very short order.
Maybe a cheap MEMS accelerometer based gyro would serve well. Hell, I bet an iPad or iPhone would do a pretty decent job.
