Anyone flying into Oshkosh?  I am planning on being it the homebuilt camping area Friday to Sunday in my TR-1 taildragger.

I am not going this year but I am wondering if you are planning on flying 

non stop? As I recall, you have 100 gal. capacity. Have you ever taken off 

with the tanks full?

I wanted to go but I have to go to a family wedding instead. Hopefully next year. [img]cid:323(at)goomoji.gmail[/img]

 

PS, I have 92 galon capacity in my airplane and have flown with it at max gross (2500) a few times. It climbs a little slower but still at around 900-1000ft/min in a "normal" day.

Hi Tim,



If I were going solo I would go non stop for sure.  It is about 9 hours and 75 gallons from Camarillo, near los angeles, no wind, going direct.  The most I have taken off with half full mains which is about 10 gallons a side and 25 gallons a side in the rear tanks which makes 70 gallons.  I was doing aft CG testing.



My girlfriend is going with me which limits us to about 3 hour legs.  Maybe someday i can talk her into using the lady J.

How did you do the fuel tanks to get 92 gallons?  I am probably going to build a 4 place with a 540 and I want as much fuel as possible in the wing.  I am thinking 150 gallons with a fully wet wing and the aileron bellcrank in the wingtip.

Rich and I opened the bay behind the main spar. It holds an additional 20gal per wing. We made a 2" x 1" gravity fed cross feed under the spar so the rear tank empties into the front tank without any additional selector valves or fail point. We also put a vent between the front and rear tank so the fuel flows nicely between the tanks if needed. We also put a fuel drain in the "cross feed" point but I have never had any water there since the actual low point of the system remains the original one.  



When you fill the tanks you can hear the "gurgling" as the rear tank fills. If you fill the tank quickly, the level will drop as fuel balances out by flowing from the front tank to the rear tank. I normally fuel one wing then go fuel the other wing. Then I top them off if needed. I normally only fill to 30galons a side but if I find cheap fuel, I fill it up and get about 10-11hrs of flying with the cheaper fuel. I feel the cost of adding the tanks more than paid for itself in fuel savings.

How many bays behind the spar did you use for fuel?

How much fuel do you think you would have if all the bays were used?

That would be a fun trip, non stop! Of course, having your girlfriend along 

can be more fun!



I flew into Camarillo in 93 to visit Rich's shop prior to purchasing my kit. 

I was also there in 97 or early 98, Rich was rebuilding the IO-240, and I 

made templates of his baffling in order to build mine. It's a nice airport.

I only used the top rear bay in each wing. They hold slightly over 20gal each. If I had opened the lower rear bay I could have gotten another 10 galons per wing for a total fuel capacity of 110 gal. At least that is what Rich told me when we did it. The trick was the gravity crossfeed. Simple, effective and impossible to fail. It was another one of Rich's brilliant ideas.

Thinking back I should have done the full 110 gallons while the wing was open, but hindsight is 20/20.
