Hi Galin,
Glad to hear that it will be a pretty quick fix.
You might want to think about sending the exhaust to Aircraft Exhaust or someone to copy it and make a nice stainless steel exhaust. The other pipes may fail soon too.

[quote]We completed a detailed inspection of the airplane and the damage is minor. YAAAAY! I will need a small stainless steel patch on the firewall, a new L bracket, a new steel pin, some minor fiberglass work and new piece of exhaust. It will take longest (1-2 weeks) to have the different parts fabricated and shipped to me. After that is should take another week to reassemble everything and have her back in the air. Here you can see the broken exhaust pipe and the damage it did to the nose wheel assembly.
The broken exhaust pipe was behind the other one so you could not see it during a normal pre-flight inspection. Murphy is alive and well in aviation.

Hello Galin, Rich wrote that the shock absorber for the KIS Cruiser nose gear came from a Ford Falcon. That should narrow your search down a bit.
OC
==============================================
Yes there is a part number (733699) but nobody can seem to cross reference the part number on the shock. They want a make model year of a car in order to find it. What shock are you using in your nose-wheel?

Galin,
How did you like the performance of the shock you had? Could it have been softer or harder?
Now's your chance to adjust to your liking.

Using OC's information about the shock absorber being from a Ford Falcon, a very tenacious O'Reilley's auto parts employee found it. It is a Monroe-matic Plus 31069 shock absorber. You will have to cut the top cover off in order make it fit inside the assembly but otherwise it is a perfect fit.

Keep this information handy in case you need a replacement. :0)

Looks like it is essentially a shock dampened coil spring assembly. The top part that you have to cut away is essentially the dust cover that was replaced by the outside of the nose gear tube. Interesting bit of Aggie Engineering. (Inside joke on Texas A & M)
The replacement looks like the right one. Can you tell if the exhaust heat did any damage to the gear tube?

Here is a picture of the disassembled nose gear assembly with a new shock absorber next to it. An extension is added to the top part of the shock absorber with two suspension coils that are also part of the assembly as spacers. You can see the top part of the stock shock that must be cut off in order for it to fit inside the assembly.

As far as we can tell there was no damage whatsoever to the gear tube.
I got a reply from Matronics saying the picture can't be forwarded so here is another smaller version of the same picture just in case.

Galin,
I have the steerable gear and may want to change to the castoring gear in the future.
If it is not too much trouble could you please measure the gear and put the dimension and more foto's and deatails on Bob's site as I only see the steerable version in the manual.
Thanks
MIke

Hi Galin,
I was thinking of dimensional drawings so that I coulsd build a replica.
I would appreciate a copy of the supplement to the manual, all the info may be there.
Thanks

Mike and other TR-4 builders and owners,
The complete nose gear assembly sans the shock and spring set that goes inside is still available from Lyle Hendrick. The current price is $2800 US dollars plus shipping. Lyle made only 25 of these nose gear assemblies for Tri-R, so the rest of the fleet has either the early straight steerable gear assembly or none at all.
Also available now is the retractable steps. Not sure what the cost is on this item but Lyle can fill these orders should any builders or owners be interested.
Attached is a picture of the nose gear recently shipped to Dennis F. in Texas Also attached is a picture of the step set.

Lyle just supplied me with the parts I needed to fix my nose wheel assembly. Very reasonable price and fast service.
