Hi all,

It's been a while since I last posted on this group, largely due to the fact that I sold my KIS Cruiser.
I am now looking for a new project and am considering buying my Cruiser back and fitting a turbine engine. I know absolutely nothing about turbines, and hence the reason for this post. If anyone can point me in the right direction or provide some other useful information, I'm all ears.
Thanks a mil.

Hi John,

What turbine are you thinking of?

The first fact to learn is that turbine fuel is heavier per gallon than 100LL and not as widely available as 100LL. Also things grow in Jet-A and "Prist" or something is usually used to keep anything from growing. I don't know how Prist reacts with the epoxy.

It is worth remembering that the most efficient aircraft engine ever mass produced, to my knowledge, is the turbo-compound R-3350 from WWII.  My modified lycoming 360 has a best specific fuel consumption of about 0.40, a good, current technology car engine can hit 0.35, the R-3350 turbo compound could do 0.32. A current technology PT-6 (king-air, TBM-700, etc) has a best SFC of 0.58. SFC is Horsepower per pounds/hour of fuel.

If your goal is a great airplane then I would recommend a lycoming 360 modified for efficiency and performance. There are some great parts out there today. If you want to go really fast up high then a turbo 360 modified for efficiency and performance.

If a fun project is the goal and a turbine turns you on then have fun.

Scott

Just wondering what advantage you are hoping to achieve with a turbine?  Also,  If you need a Cruiser without engine and avionics, I have one in my garage.

Now THAT sounds like a cool project. I think 100LL will eventually go away and a Jet-A type alternative is a good idea. Besides, it sounds like fun to do.
