Hi All
Currently flying back from Gibraltar. Three Europa aircraft flying together experience similar issue. Just finished research.
REASON FOR IPAD AND IPHONE FAILURE IN FLIGHT
Be aware
Research now confirms (citation Apple Support) if you operate iOS devices where the ambient temperature exceeds 35º C , the high-temperature conditions cause the device to change its behavior to regulate its temperature. On this Europa trip we been experiencing 40º C!
Higher ambient temperature conditions and activities cause the device to alter performance and behaviour. These conditions include:
1. Leaving the device in the plane on a hot day.
2. Leaving the device in direct sunlight for an extended period of time. Under the Europa canopy is a killer.
3. Extra workload beyond normal tolerance. We are demanding more from the device when using it as the primary preferred GPS device. Using certain features this feature exasperates an already high stress situation.
If the interior temperature of the device exceeds the normal operating range, the device will protect its internal components by attempting to regulate its temperature. IT SHUTS DOWN.
Happily the robust Garmin Aera in my Mono and the Garmin 496 in the TRI are made of sterner stuff. They continued working. Those pieces of kit together with up to date paper maps were invaluable.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the report. The overheat shut down of iPads has been
known and reported since the release of these products years ago.
Heat accelerates the deterioration of all electronic components
under all circumstances, although some components are a bit more
tolerant than others. Ambient temperature is irrelevant from an
engineering perspective. Apple's Guidelines are written by lawyers for
consumers who might sue for melting their iPhone by leaving it on an
automobile glare shield on a sunny day in Las Vegas.
The actual technical detail is that these devices have an internal
temperature sensor which activates a shut down process at a CPU
temperature of 145°F if memory serves (and these days it may not).
If you arrange for convective or forced air cooling of the device in your
cockpit, the ambient temperature is much less important.
The Garmin products you mentioned were designed for use in hot
cockpits and also for use in bright sunlight. The Apple products
were designed for light weight, long battery life, and convenient form
factor for their intended purpose.
Life is a tradeoff and many people use iPads, etc. in flight because the
software is arguably much better (easier to use, more features, etc) and
the software vendors like Foreflight charge much less for database updates
than the bloodsucking Garmin or Jeppesen. Life is a tradeoff.
Also, allow me to correct a misperception. Running Foreflight (for example)
does not make an iPad (or any computer running an application) work
"harder". The machine is running the same CPU clock if running your app or
sitting in an idle loop. In the case of iPads and iPhones, the rapid updating of
GPS position does slightly increase battery draw, but this can be more than
compensated for by shutting off the baseband functions (i.e., the cell phone
functions in flight) which draw far more power than the GPS. The most
power consumption in one of these products is usually the backlight behind
the LCD screen. In a bright cockpit like a Europa, you would almost certainly
set the screen brightness to maximum, whereas in a Cessna, the screen
would be readable with far less brightness.

Hi Ira
Good information. Quality comments. Appreciated.
Am continuing with Garmin Aera / Paper / eyeball combination .
iPhone and iPad remain as my nice to have backup for the moment.
Interesting that the next generation of tablets and and phones are just starting to incorporate pipe radiators to deal with the extreme heating issue. E.g. Very latest Samsung Galaxy 7.

Of historical note and not at all portable, the original iMacs with the screen
on a steel stalk had a heat pipe up the stalk from the CPU in the base thus avoiding a fan. Heat pipes are great at moving heat from one area of
equipment to another, or to a radiative surface.
I am not sure this technology would be applicable to the situation inside a cockpit where the heat generated inside the black box pales in comparison
the absorbed heat from the environment (i.e., the infrared absorption and
the heat conducted in from the hot surface in lies on)
I my Europa, I had to resort to blast air for cooling both intra- and extra
panel electronics.

We recently upgraded from a early iPad 1 to an iPad Air (black version). We seldom had any difficulty with the iPad 1 shutting down due to temperature. But the new Air often would.
A friend suggested that we equip our new Air with a "moshi iVisor AG for iPad". He suggested the white version saying it would make the iPad run cooler. We tried the white moshi today, and it made a noticeable difference in how hot the iPad feels and we didn't have it shut down at all.
We purchased our moshi from Amazon.

I suspect anything that changes the device color from black to anything else
will reduce the rate at which an electronics (forgive me) black box will overheat.
