Guys,

I have finally found the Nitrogen leak I have been searching for the last few months.

My RV-3V-29 valve is leaking like crazy.

This is the valve - located below you right elbow when seated in the front cockpit - that reduces from 50ATM to 3ATM for the canopy seal (Va10 on the pneumatic schematic).

Has anyone ever took this valve apart to clean it? It looks like there is some dirt in there that could cause it to leak.

Of course, this it the one and only reduction valve that you can't find in book III, all the other reduction valves you can see the cutout...

Thanks

Dan

Mine leaked also, would lose all pressure within 2 hours. You can open it and replace the round diaphram with rubber from a raft patch kit. Mine was hard and flaking apart inside. Take lots of photos, there 2 pins inside that have to go back in the same way.

That is exactly what is happening to me. The "seal" is all dried out.

I am glad to know it can be changed. Would you remember any details that could help out? More specifically the thickness of the rubber you used? And how did you remove the current seal?

I will definitely take many pictures to make sure I can rebuilt the proper way.

Here are a few ones of the actual seal when you open the valve.

I rebuild all of them in my airplane. My system is holding pressure now for weeks. Don't use any rubber for the diaphragm. It's really important that you use reinforced material. Rubber will can not handle the pressure all the time and will leak very bad. If that happens in flight, you will loose all you nitrogen before you can land.

I used a Zodiak repair kit. You can find them at most marine shop for about $20. The patches are Kevlar reinforced, so it helps in holding the pressure. The valve on my rear canopy has been holding at 40atm for about a month now.

I needed to glue two layers of patch to get the proper thickness. And it took quite some time to produce the first seal. The patch is difficult to cut and we wanted to be sure we got the circle right. It basically took me a day to make the seals alone. I did 3, so now I have a spare.
