|

I would like to replace my wire stripper that has recently failed. I am interested in a tool that can strip wires in the range 10-22 AWG and possibly smaller wires as the ones sometimes used in avionics and instruments. I would buy 2 strippers, if necessary.
Could somebody make a recommendation for a good quality, reliable tool?
Thanks.

Hi Bridget,
I used Klein Tools “curve strippers” for hard to reach places and larger wires. I think it does 10-22.
For the small wires, when I had plenty of room I used “ Ideal” mechanical type strippers. I think they went down to #24. They were easier to use on the tiny wires.
Hope this helps!

I'll second the recommendation for the Ideal Industries StripMaster tool. You can buy one tool and multiple sets of dies to strip most common wire gauges.
Here are the part numbers and gauge ranges for the tools and blade sets. [My apologies for the formatting of this information; this ancient forum software makes it impossible to post tabular data in a way that's easily readable both online and in the email digest.]
Tool P/N, Blade Set P/N, AWG Stripped
45-090, L-4419, 8/10/12
45-091, L-4420, 10/12/14/16/18
45-092, L-4421, 10/12/14/16/18/20/22
45-093, L-4422, 14/16/18/20/22
45-097, L-4994, 16/18/20/22
45-098, L-5361, 20/22/24/26/28/30
45-099, L-8763, 8/10/16/18
Basically, you want to buy either tool 45-090 -or- 45-092 -or- 45-098, then buy the blade sets corresponding to the other two. You'll have everything covered from 8 to 30 AWG.

I went through the Navy micro-miniature repair school back in the 70s and we were only allowed to use a die type blade stripper for Tefzel wire. This was to prevent any possible nicking of the wire strands. These Ideal strippers are not cheap. They're good for 16-26 AWG.
45-1610
45-1976
45-2133
I have the 45-1976 they work well.
