Hello
I currently have a “Bendix” Shower of Sparks Magneto on the left side of my RV6A and a PMag on the right. The Bendix is in need of an overhaul and I am undecided whether to do this, or purchase another PMag. In the meantime, I have a non-impulse Bendix mag that I was thinking of installing as a temporary solution. I would of course disable/remove the buzz box if this were to happen.
My questions are:
1) Does a mag care which side of the engine it is on, as this non-impulse mag was originally on the right side and will now be on the left?

2)The ignition switch has a jumper designed to ground the right Mag during start, but was removed when the PMag was installed. As such, can a jumper from the aforementioned ground be connected to the proposed non-impulse left mag so that it will ground during start?

Although a bit more work, it may be prudent to switch the PMag to the left side and put the non-impulse mag on the right.

Thanks,
John

G’day John.

I have shower of sparks too.

Someone may pipe up with a good advice, but FWIW:

Q1. No, I don’t believe the mags care which side they’re on, but you do. Correct, once the LHS shower of sparks mag is removed the advance/retard breakers aren’t in play, nor the induction vibrator (as you say) which is energised on when ’start’ is engaged.

Q2. Yes you could and should swap the grounding lead over if you put the non-impulse coupled mag on the left to stop it causing kick-back (a hazard and bad for the engine). This assumes the PMag has variable timing and the grunt to produce a hot spark at low RPM (I know it’s electric, but don’t know how they function during starting).

However, I wouldn’t leave it that way. If/when the shower of sparks is reinstalled I’d put it back on the left so the system architecture is logical (depending on whether you have independent switches for the mags or rotary switch).

Kind regards, Stuart

John,

The mag doesn't care which side it's on.
Correct, you don't want it to fire during the start.  If the jumper accomplishes that, it should be fine.
Might wanna make good and sure you're grounding the main points and not the starting points.
I'm running two E-Mags now.  Love 'em!
