|
|
It has been 20 years since I built the wings, 10 years since I painted them and 8 years since I first put Avgas in.
Recently the paint on the top surface on the right wing has started blistering but only where the fuel tank is located. The blisters are 1/8 to 3/16 in size and +/- 1 inch apart. The blistering is more severe towards the fuselage where the Avgas is in permanent contact with the top skin because of the dihedral. When I cut the blisters open the paint has lifted from below the primer and the bare fibreglass is visible.
The paint used was Stewart Systems water based paint, they are not able to suggest a cause.
I drained the tank and did a leak test and the tank has now held pressure for 3 days.
I have always only had Avgas in it, I don’t know if it is important but the Avgas is old.
I have not gone down below the top layer of fibreglass to see if there is any fuel inside the honeycomb.
Any suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mike
