Someone on the list was asking to see baggage area and rear bulkhead photos. I finally found one of my aircraft, N31BZ, the Esqual LS - Lightning Stuff. B&B in Shelbyville (they do contract work for Pete and the guys) did my interior and they had the embroidery done on the bulkhead. In this photo the side panels in the cockpit are not in place yet and it looks like the baggage area headliner is also not in place. The slits on either side of the clear FAA paperwork holder are for the shoulder harnesses.
As a side thought and suggestion for Lightning builders, I will be adding some sort of vent in the bulkhead to let air out of the cockpit. In the summer when you have both cockpit fresh air vents open and you are cruising at 170 or so, so much air come into the cockpit that there is some pressurization of the cockpit. The canopy actually bulges out slightly on each side. Some way for this air to flow through the cockpit into the aft fuselage should fix this situation.
  Blue Skies,
  Buz

				Buz,
Even at 80-90kts in the motorglider the cockpit
pressurisation is significant as a function of the
effective cabin ventilation. I fitted what looks like
a small radio speaker cover to the bulkhead as a vent
into the rear fuselage and the increae in airflow into
 the cockpit is doubled.

I did however fit it a little low on the bulkhead as
when the baggage area is holding a lot of gear it will
usually block the vent partially so it would pay to
set it higher on the bulkhead.

How effect is the Lightning cockpit ventilation
 without canopy side scoops?

  Hi Laurie,
The Lightning has great cockpit ventilation.   Each side of the fuselage, just aft of the firewall, has a NACA ducts that provide air to the cockpit. In the cockpit are adjustable outlets that lets you open and close off the air flow. There are no canopy side scoops. However there is an option to add a small sliding canopy opening similar to what I have seen on gliders. I have one of these on my Esqual canopy. On the ground you can taxi with the Lightning canopy slightly open for fresh air.
As far as a mod to let air flow through the cockpit, I have found some round 3" aluminum vents that I plan to use. I will put one on each side of the aft baggage bulkhead near the top. How large was that outlet vent you used?

				Buz,
About 5" diameter. Pleased to hear that the Lightning
canopy can be cracked open on the ground. Sure does
get hot in this country at times.

				Buz and Laurie, et al,
The Diamond DA40 has the same style canopy as the Lightning. There is an additional locking hole for the canopy latching pin to go into. It is located about 1 inch above the "closed and locked" hole. You raise the canopy, and latch it in this slightly opened position when on the ground and it provides a great ventilation on the ground when the engine is running.

The DA-40 also has a little vent window on the side. It is worthless in flight and on the ground unless you stick your hand out and "scoop" some air into the cockpit.

I am not recommending this additional hole except as a possibility, because I have not looked at the fuselage strength where the canopy latch hole is located. It is a great feature on the DA-40. Check it out the next time you see a DA-40.

Another feature they have is a painted "ceiling" on the roof of the canopy to block some of the sun. However, the sun and the painted "ceiling" are in cahoots. They move just enough for the sun to beat on your head or get into your eyes on EVERY flight.

Oops. On re-looking at Buz's picture, the canopy lock down system may be different than on the DA-40. Ready Fire Aim....

				Scotty,
The two-hole canopy latching part is also on the Lightning prototype.
Not sure if anybody else uses it or not. Also Buz utilized something that
looks like a painted cieling, but it's the stick on type of sun visor stuff
so it is just a darkened area above the cockpit. When I flew the Ligthning
out to Arizona I had some stick on sun visors and they worked really well
and I could move them around as the sun moved around. Brian W.

				Brian,
Yes, I get them at Walmart (in the FAA approved section, of course) and keep them in my flight bag. When they quit sticking to the window, I wash them with a mild detergent and they magically start sticking again.

I have an Esqual which I have installed a Kroger sunshade. It slides back
on a track that is double faced taped to inside of canopy. It keeps cockpit
cooler on sunny days and on cloudy days you simply slide it back. It never
gets in the way and it looks cool. Got mine through Vans Aircraft.
Rosen makes a sunshade that I also use, You simply apply it with suction
 cubs. Blocks sun very well.

We have two side windows in the canopy of our Lightning; they aren't sliding windows but are actually small rectangular windows that are hinged on the bottom so open down. They will be either open or closed - no partial opening.

That's kind of cool. Are they large enough to stick a camera lens through, or is that not practical? Also, do you have a pic of the installation?

				Jim,
Here's a blow up of a pic that I took. Not of the canopy, but I cropped
it. The windows are similar to many different versions of Piper Arrows that
I have flown. Just a little fold down. You could probably get a camera
lense through the hole, but it's not very practical as the wing is right
there. You might could turn the plane on its side every now and again and
get a shot out of it. Regardless it helps with cockpit ventilation. It's
similar to Buz's sliding window, just this one henges and folds down. Brian

VERY NICE! Thanks to you both for the information. THe reasont that I asked is that my daughter LOVES to take pictures and is very excited about going up in ANY aircraft that I fly. RIght now, I am flying a rental 172 and you can't open the windows and they are typically scratched so the pics come out foggy. Having a big clear canopy will make things a little better, Having a small window to stick the lens through might work too.

Will you have your aircraft at Sun N Fun? If so, I can get a look at them when I'm at the show.

				Jim,
I too love to shoot aerial photos. I did a photoshoot for a local paper
last year of industry around the city. We got some great pics. I had to
use a Cherokee 140. Well the wing was always in the way. The pilot wa an
ex- Air Force B-52 and F-111 pilot. He would crank it over 90 degrees and
let me get a shot. Problem was that we couldn't hold that but for a second.
I've found that high wing airplanes that the window will open fully or the
door can be removed is best for that. There is a Rans S7S with a Jabiru
firewall forward kit on it at Shelbyville right now. It'd make a fantastic
camera platform as the whole side of the plane can be removed for flight.

				Jim,

We plan to be at Sun 'n' Fun if the registration comes in time for the inspection and 40 hours to be flown off. Just in a holding pattern right now!
