Phil,
Not sure Speed Brake is a good idea, but something to look into - especially with input from this group. Structually the airplane could handle one somewhere under the center fuselage with a simple mechanical open close handle. A small one might not be hard to operate and might be an interesting and useful addition. Right now I am just thinking about the subject. All comments are welcome.

I've seen speed brakes used on fast airplanes but I don't think the XL would benefit that much. Anything extended into the airstream from the belly would cause a fairly dramatic pitching movement.
Reduce the power and apply backpressure to maintain altitude and I would think it would slow nicely.

A small spoiler on each wing would have the effect of a rapid descent with less effect on the longitudinal stability but then again, I'm a great believer in the KISS principle.

Maybe some road flares mounted under the wings...little retro rockets!

I do know some real rocket scientists at Raytheon Missle Systems in Tucson (where I work). Perhaps the could build me some small retro rockets and a couple of small regular rockets to give the homeland Security folks something to worry about! Wing spoilers, nifty concept. Gotta look into that one too!

On second thought all the small retro rockets and small regular rockets would have to be fake and made of composite to avoid serious weight problems. Still, flying around here with even fake ones would be a 'hoot" at best, a real "drag" at worst.

I think I'd leave the whole idea alone. The last thing anyone needs is a spoiler that doesn't retract.

How about just using a little cross-controls, rudder one way, ailerons the other. What speed range are we talking about? If you need to go from 150 down to 60 for an approach, I'd say the approach was set up wrong in the first place.

It's not like the XL is some 600 mph airliner, or even a 300 mph WWII dive bomber. It shouldn't take to long to go from 135 cruise down to 70 for an approach.
